Current knowledge on biomarkers for contact sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis

Abstract: Abstract:Contact sensitization is common and affects up to 20% of the general population. The clinical manifestation of contact sensitization is allergic contact dermatitis. This is a clinical expression which is sometimes difficult to distinguish from other types of dermatitis, e.g. irritant and atopic dermatitis. Several studies have examined the pathogenesis and severity of allergic contact dermatitis by measuring the absence or presence of various biomarkers. In this review article, we provide a non-systema… Show more

“…There is some evidence that increased TEWL can be an indicator of individual susceptibility to the development of contact dermatitis, 25 and of early development of hand dermatitis related to occupational exposure to irritants. [26][27][28] In this study, both frequent hand washing and an established greater exposure of apprentices to skin hazards in the Zagreb region were confirmed as predictors that were positively associated with hand and forearm TEWL values in multiple linear regression models. In other words, apprentices from Zagreb and those who frequently washed their hands had higher hand and forearm TEWL values.…”

“…Defects in the FLG biochemistry are found in the majority of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), a disease associated with dry skin. A reduction of NMF may also be caused by contact irritants, whose action cannot be assigned to a loss of FLG …”

“…3 † These observations suggest that the alterations in the corneocyte surface topography might be attributed to the skin barrier damage caused by the irritant, rather than to inflammation itself. 4 Therefore, we were interested in whether the changes in the DTI and NMF levels were SLS-specific or also occurred with other skin irritants.…”
