A partir do século XVI, começou a ocorrer um processo histórico fundamental no mundo ocidental: as crescentes interconexões/relações interétnicas/violações ambientais, econômicas, sociais e culturais, que ligaram uma diversidade de biomas de paisagens naturais, antes desconhecidas, todas as riquezas da flora e da fauna, a grupos étnicos, ricos em recursos naturais. Essas diversidades foram perscrutadas e registradas em diferentes documentos manuscritos e impressos entre os séculos XVI e XIX (Gesteira, 2013). Variados tipos de fontes históricas foram legados por informantes, que investigavam, representavam e analisavam o chamado 'Novo Mundo', como é o caso da América portuguesa, onde nos deteremos. Esses informantes eram, por exemplo, administradores coloniais, militares, boticários, médicos, cientistas, religiosos jesuítas, franciscanos, carmelitas, entre outros (Kury, 2004).Os modos como esses indivíduos enxergaram e se relacionaram com a natureza, sobretudo no território que veio a ser denominado de Brasil, são frutos de momentos históricos do passado que reverberam no presente. Podemos compreender, portanto, que a relação com a natureza, especialmente com as plantas, é historicamente construída. Mergulhar nessas historicidades possibilita dar visibilidade aos diferentes protagonismos, erros e acertos presentes na construção da história da ciência e também da história ambiental, sempre amalgamadas nos processos de dominação e de relações de poder/saber, que alimentam mercados e interesses de acumulação de capital, algo crescente nas histórias moderna e contemporânea da humanidade.Os conhecimentos indígenas e os seus saberes sobre uso e aplicações de plantas nativas adentraram o mundo capitalista. A natureza e as plantas deixaram de ser apenas elementos espirituais curativos e de enfrentamento de doenças, para se tornarem recursos naturais que foram inseridos nas farmacopeias, entre os séculos XVI e XIX (Edler, 2006).
