“…M. amazonicum presents low fecundity compared with the giant river prawn M. rosenbergii , which spawns around 80 000 to 100 000 eggs (New ). However, the Oriental river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense , a small but very important freshwater prawn farmed in China, only produces ~5000 eggs (Kutty & Weimin ). This value is similar to the mean fecundity observed in M. amazonicum in the present study.…”

“…In contrast, M. rosenbergii has not been significantly intensified mainly because of the increased levels of cannibalism that occur at higher densities (Brown et al 2010;New 2010). In contrast, intensification of M. nipponense was seen as a solution to meet domestic consumption needs (Kutty & Miao 2010).…”

“…Artificial breeding and larval-rearing technology of the two Macrobrachium species for large-scale commercial production have been established with annual postlarvae (PL) production of approximately 20 billion and 30 billion of M. rosenbergii and M. nipponense, respectively (Fu et al 2012). The M. nipponense larvae mainly rely on natural reproduction in the culture water body, and growth of species has thus possibly been constrained by a dependence on self-recruitment and inbreeding (Feng et al 2008;Kutty & Miao 2010), but wild-caught PL and juveniles are rarely used due to difficulties of transportation and low survival (Kutty & Miao 2010). In contrast, the M. rosenbergii larvae derive from commercial artificial hatcheries for which production remains inconsistent (Kutty & Miao 2010;New & Kutty 2010).…”

“…Besides the giant river prawn, the other main species farmed is the oriental river prawn M. nipponense (Kutty & Weimin ). This native species is generally regarded in China as having a better taste and more desirable texture (more tender) than other species despite its smaller size (X. Zhou, pers.…”
