Crystal and Molecular Structures of a Neutral Pentanuclear Copper(I)−Iodide Complex

Abstract: The novel pentanuclear species ( 1 ) is prepared from copper(I) iodide and tetraethylthiuram monosulfide. It features a central Cu3I3 cage with two fused CuLI units. This structure is one of the scarce examples of copper(I) pentanuclear compounds so far reported.

“…The Cu–Cu bond distances in 7 are similar to those observed in 5 . It is worth noting that while several dithiocarbamate clusters of Cu(I) , and Ag(I) are known, none are from CS 2 insertion or derived from a dinuclear species.…”

“…There is now a fair amount of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data on a series of CuXL complexes, sufficient to stage a comprehensive discussion of steric and electronic factors that determine the solid-state structure of these compounds (X = Cl, Br, I). The results of the structural studies are summarized in Table 3 (6 ).…”

“…The molecular geometry and structural parameters observed were comparable to those reported here. Thermal motion and an insufficient number of data led to an unsatisfactory structure solution 15. Repeated attempts to reproduce this synthetic result were unsuccessful.…”
