A B S T R A C TExotic peregrine earthworms are often considered to cause environmental harm and to have a negative impact on native species, but, as ecosystem engineers, they enhance soil physical properties. Pontoscolex corethrurus is by far the most studied morphospecies and is also the most widespread in tropical areas. The term of morphospecies is used in this review because P. corethrurus may in fact constitute a complex of cryptic species. This earthworm is found in a wide range of habitats, from apparently pristine to any kind of human-disturbed environment. This review synthesizes 265 studies describing the distribution, morphology, biological and ecological traits of this morphospecies, as well as its impacts on soil conditions and communities. We then discuss the characteristics necessary for this specific morphospecies to become a successful colonizer throughout the world and the positive and negative effects it can have on the ecosystems that it has invaded. We emphasize the lack of knowledge of P. corethrurus reproductive mode and ploidy level, of its population genetics, and of the potential existence of cryptic species. To finish, we highlight the fact that data on P. corethrurus interactions with non-earthworm soil macrofauna are scarce.

Important knowledge gaps remain with regards to the ecology and the systematics of New Zealand's native earthworms. With many putative new species yet to be described, often specimens cannot be named, which makes species inventory, monitoring and community comparisons difficult. Our work aimed to identify new putative taxa of New Zealand native species of earthworms, and describe their distribution in selected human-modified ecosystems. A total of 24 earthworm taxa (13 native and 11 exotic) were identified using a DNA barcoding approach focusing on 16S rDNA and COI (cytochrome oxidase subunit 1). The combination of morphological and molecular analyses were complementary in elucidating species identity. However, of the 13 native taxa, eight could not be named and are likely to be undescribed species from the genera Octochaetus, Maoridrilus and Deinodrilus. Most native species appeared to have a restricted geographic distribution linked to soil conditions, in particular pH and organic matter.

Although earthworms are hermaphroditic animals with biparental sexual reproduction, some parthenogenetic species have been found. Evolutionary trends in parthenogenetic earthworms revealed a reduction in the reproductive organs. To clarify the phylogenetic relationships of parthenogenetic earthworms with different degree of degraded reproductive organs, we conducted a morphological analysis of the reproductive organs and molecular phylogenetic analyses of Amynthas vittatus which usually degraded a part of reproductive organs. Morphological analysis revealed that almost all individuals collected around Mt. Aobayama, Sendai city of northeastern Japan, possessed male pores, while individuals collected from areas located across Hirose River did not. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial DNA sequences of 48 individuals representing 20 populations indicated that almost all individuals collected around Mt. Aobayama belonged to a different lineage from the other populations collected around Sendai, and that almost all individuals collected from across Japan belonged to the latter lineage. We suggest that the difference in the male pore possession rate was caused by histories of each population, but the A. vittatus population found on Mt. Aobayama belongs to a different lineage as compared to the other Japanese populations and not the primitive population. Thus, the parthenogenetic earthworm A. vittatus has undergone at least two morphological evolutionary processes.
