Abstract: The use of lambs from crossing of local with specialized sheep breeds for meat production may lead to higher meat deposition and a smaller fat amount in the carcass, with a more adequate nutritional profile for human consumption. This study investigated the performance, carcass and meat characteristics of lambs from the Morada Nova and Santa Inês locally adapted hair breeds and crosses between Dorper × Morada Nova and Dorper × Santa Inês slaughtered at approximately 35 kg. Morada Nova lambs showed lower (p < 0… Show more

“…Despite this problem related to susceptibility to haemonchosis, Dorper sheep have been introduced into tropical areas of Brazil in recent years, where they have quickly become widespread. Cross-breeding of Dorper with local breeds, especially Santa Ines hair sheep, resulted in lambs with reasonably acceptable meat carcass and with a satisfactory degree of resistance against gastrointestinal nematodes (AMARANTE et al, 2009;ISSAKOWICZ et al, 2018). No need for shearing is another advantage of Dorper sheep in tropical environments.…”

“…Dorper is the result of the cross between Dorset Horn and Blackhead Persian, original transboundary breeds from South Africa. It presents high productivity with excellent performance, conformation, and uniform carcasses associated with meat quality (Ocak et al 2016;Issakowicz et al 2018;Joy et al 2020). Locally adapted breeds, such as Santa Inês, showed small bodyweight sizes compared to exotic specialized breeds (Malhado et al 2009).…”
