Background Due to the lack of a specific quality of life (QoL) survey on dentofacial deformities (DFD) for Turkish speakers, the present research aimed to perform a translation of the English version of the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) into Turkish (the OQLQ-TR) and provide cultural adaptation to the Turkish population. Material and Methods The process of this cross-cultural adaptation followed the six stages given in the guidelines that were proposed by Beaton et al . (2000), which comprised the following: 1) performing the initial translation, 2) synthesizing the translation, 3) performing the back translation, 4) presenting it to the expert committee, and 5) testing the prefinal version. Throughout the process of validating the Turkish version, the results of the OQLQ were compared with the Oral Health Impact Scale-14 (OHIP-14) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), which were previously validated in Turkish. All of these Turkish questionnaires (OHIP-14, SF-36, OQLQ) were applied to 69 patients at the Çukurova University Faculty of Dentistry. Results Analysis of the internal consistency of the OQLQ-TR exhibited good correlations for the domains. Moreover, the test-retest reliability also exhibited intra-class correlation coefficients that were excellent. The correlation between the OQLQ-TR and SF-36 was weak and negative. The OQLQ-TR exhibited good correlations with the OHIP-14 and VAS. Conclusions The OQLQ-TR was found to be valid, reliable, and reproducible. Thus, it has become a useful instrument for assessing the quality of life of Turkish-speaking patients with dentofacial deformity. Bevezetés: Az arc megjelenése komoly hatással van az emberi életre. Amíg a harmonikus és szép arcforma növelheti az önbecsülést, addig az állcsontok alak- és méretbeli eltérései nemcsak funkcionális, hanem esztétikai hátrányokhoz, ezáltal negatív pszichoszociális következményekhez vezethetnek. Az arcformának és a különböző orvosi/fogorvosi kezeléseknek az életminőségre kifejtett hatását életminőség-kérdőívekkel lehet mérni. Bár a nemzetközi szakirodalomban több ilyen életminőség-kérdőív is található, magyar nyelvű, validált változat eddig még nem állt rendelkezésre. Célkitűzés: A nemzetközi irodalomban leggyakrabban használt Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) kérdőív magyar nyelvű fordítása, kulturális adaptációja és validálása. Módszer: A magyar változatot (OQLQ-H) visszafordításos módszerrel készítettük el. A 22 kérdésből álló tesztet a klinikánk ambulanciáján megjelent, önként vállalkozó betegek töltötték ki. A validálás során a nemzetközileg elfogadott standardokat alkalmaztuk. A teszt megbízhatóságát pszichometriai módszerekkel elemeztük. Eredmények: A kérdőív belső konzisztenciája, valamint pszichometriai mutatói megfelelőnek bizonyultak. Következtetés: Az OQLQ-H az arc- és állcsontfejlődési zavarok mérésére alkalmas, jól használható és megbízható mérőeszköz, alkalmazását ajánljuk. Orv Hetil. 2022; 163(32): 1275–1280.

The Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) was developed just over twenty years ago to measure quality of life (QoL) changes in patients with dentofacial deformities undergoing orthognathic surgery. However, despite being used in several studies conducted in Arabic-speaking nations of the Middle East and North Africa region, there has yet to be a formal psychometric evaluation of an Arabic OQLQ. The aim of this study was to develop and assess the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of an Arabic version of the OQLQ in a cohort of Saudi Arabian patients with malocclusions and dentofacial deformities. The translation of the OQLQ used an established method for adapting health questionnaires, where the questionnaire underwent translation and back-translation by bilinguals with subsequent consultation with professionals. Cronbach’s α coefficient for internal consistency was 0.92, denoting “excellent” internal consistency, and test-retest reliability was good to excellent. Overall OQOL scores were weakly but positively correlated with satisfaction with surgical treatment and were significantly lower after surgery than before surgery. The Arabic version of the OQLQ is conceptually similar to the English version, comprehensible, reliable, valid, and responsive. Future studies should now use this standardized version to ensure reliability of the results and allow comparisons between studies.
