Critical Review of Polymeric Building Envelope Materials: Degradation, Durability and Service Life Prediction

Abstract: This paper provides a critical review of the degradation, durability and service life prediction (SLP) of polymeric building envelope materials (BEMs), namely, claddings, air/vapour barriers, insulations, sealants, gaskets and fenestration. The rate of material deterioration and properties determine the usefulness of a product; therefore, knowledge of the significant degradation mechanisms in play for BEMs is key to the design of proper SLP methods. SLP seeks to estimate the life expectancy of a material/compo… Show more

“…For example, Specimen A has a higher k value by 50% when compared to polystyrene foam. Although all test specimens show higher thermal conductivity values in comparison with polystyrene foam, their values are still higher than that of other construction materials such as brick (4.81 W/(m.K)), 40 gypsum board (0.21 W/(m.K)), 41 and concrete board (0.35 W/(m.K)). 41 Also, they possess higher densities that reflects positively on other physical and mechanical properties, which are described in the next sections.…”

“…Cladding with decorative polystyrene elements is easy to make, it is also more economical in terms of costs which average 15 -20 euros per 1 m 2 , but the lifespan of these types of facades is shorter [16] than when using stone or limestone plywood.…”
