Creating characters in a story-telling universe

Abstract: Extended story generation, i.e., the creation of continuing serials, presents difficult and interesting problems for Artificial Intelligence. We present here the first phase or the development of a program, UNIVERSE, that will ultimately tell extended stories. In particular, alter describing our overall model of story telling, we present a method Cor creating universes of characters appropriate for extended story generation. This method concentrates on the need to keep story-telling universes consistent and co… Show more

“…We also tend to choose the work which provides a full-fledged system design of interactive narrative, rather than merely focuses on a particular issue, such as narrative generation. Thus, some earlier works on automatic story generation, such as TaleSpin [42], Universe [43] and MINSTREL [44], are not included in this review. In the following sub-sections, the reviewed works are presented in chronological order to give the reader a general idea of how the technologies of interactive narrative have evolved over the years.…”

“…Salient examples of planning-based story generation systems include Tale-Spin [11], Universe [9] and Fabulist [16]. By contrast, computational analogy algorithms have not been sufficiently explored in the domain of story generation.…”

“…Whether manifested as total order plans (e.g. Tale-Spin [5] and Universe [6]) or the more recent use of partial order plans (e.g. Fabulist [7]), plan-based representations formalize stories as sequences of actions towards certain goals.…”
