Cranberry Polyphenols and Prevention against Urinary Tract Infections: Relevant Considerations

Abstract: Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is a distinctive source of polyphenols as flavonoids and phenolic acids that has been described to display beneficial effects against urinary tract infections (UTIs), the second most common type of infections worldwide. UTIs can lead to significant morbidity, especially in healthy females due to high rates of recurrence and antibiotic resistance. Strategies and therapeutic alternatives to antibiotics for prophylaxis and treatment against UTIs are continuously being sought afte… Show more

“…Cranberry consumption is widely recommended for UTI prophylaxis. However, there is a debate in the literature whether the effects are significant [64]. Besides cranberry, there are more nonantibiotic treatments for UTI infections, such as D-Mannose, probiotics, methenamine hippurate, estrogens, or intravesical glycosaminoglycans [65][66][67].…”

“…Moreover, dietary polyphenols may suppress adipose tissue growth, modulating antiangiogenic activity and adipocyte metabolism [59]. Further, polyphenols' benefits are related to infections, cancer, and neurodegenerative processes [69][70][71]. One prominent polyphenol in broccoli is quercetin, whose antioxidant activity was already described in Section 2 [72].…”
