COVID-19 vaccines – An Australian Review

Abstract: After millions of people have been vaccinated as often as four times within a year, the effects of these vaccinations are slowly becoming apparent. This review has been written from an Australian perspective with the main focus on the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. We will look at the promises/predictions originally made and the actual facts. Although it is well-established that the highest forms of health and well-being are experienced by those who embody the greatest levels of autonomy, the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted autonomy and freedom in decision making, such as leading healthy lifestyles like physical activity, either because of disease-related issues (e.g., battling sickness and/or long covid or fear of catching covid 19) and/or governmentally imposed covid-19 mandates, such as lockdowns, social isolation, excessive screen use, face masks, and vaccines that proved to cause extensive harm and devastation in the health of the public. The paper draws on the philosophical underpinnings of embodied physical consciousness and body schema based on Merleau-Ponty’s (1945/2014) existential freedom about decision making for living the good life. Specifically, based on Merleau-Ponty’s seminal work, Phenomenology of Perception (1945/2014), the purpose of this concept-based paper is to attempt to emphasize the importance of a strong, embodied body schema (motor habit) to freedom in decision making regarding the value of and participation in physical activity. The manuscript is divided into six sections, showcasing that such (total) freedom can be achieved by finding a balance between the body as being for itself (with consciousness and autonomy) and the body as being in the world – influenced by external forces like disease (e.g., Covid 19), disability, socio-economic status, and socio-political systems (e.g., covid-19 mandates). Given the threats to total freedom (because of our being in the world), implications for the field of Kinesiology and movement education are discussed, emphasizing ways to build a healthy physical culture, by for example implementing well-studied, ethical, and humanistic policies/recommendations regarding life challenges (e.g., disease, disability, poverty). In this way, a strong body schema can be formed for health and well-being.

Introduction: This review aims to examine asthma management during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Relevant recommendations and articles were identified by respiratory professional societies and PubMed search using the terms “asthma” and “COVID-19”, and examined for relevance and inclusion in this study. Results: Recommendations for the management of asthma have remained similar but are now supported by new evidence between the years 2020 and 2022. Patients with well-controlled, mild-to-moderate asthma are unlikely to be at increased risk of acquiring COVID-19 or having worse outcomes from COVID-19. All asthma patients should receive COVID-19 vaccination. Spirometry can be performed with the usual strict infection control procedures unless there is a suspicion of COVID-19. Mask-wearing and other health measures remain important for asthma patients. Conclusion: While previous recommendations were largely based on expert opinion, the tremendous amount of literature published since the pandemic first emerged 2 years ago has helped guide respiratory professional bodies to update their recommendations. This study provides a timely review of the various recommendations and can be used to guide healthcare professionals in managing asthma patients, as the world prepares for a future with COVID-19 becoming endemic. The long-term consequences of COVID-19 infection in asthma patients and the ripple effects of COVID-19 remain uncertain and deserve ongoing study. Keywords: Asthma, coronavirus, COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2

Late occurrence of ChAdOx1 vaccine-induced myocarditis presenting with ventricular arrhythmia

A 51-year-old woman who had received 2 injections of a ChAdOx1 vaccine in 2021 and a booster dose in 2022 was recently admitted for central chest pain accompanied with palpitations for the previous 2 weeks. She was negative for the COVID-19 virus, troponin was not elevated, both the 12-lead electrocardiogram and 2D echocardiogram were normal. At peak exercise during exercise treadmill test she developed a single ventricular couplet, but coronary angiography revealed normal coronary arteries. A 24-hour electrocardiogram recording revealed symptomatic non-sustained ventricular tachycardia while she was in bed. A 3T cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated late gadolinium sub-epicardial uptake at the left ventricle apex suggesting fibrosis. The patient was diagnosed as late presentation of myocarditis following ChAdOx1 vaccination, and was discharged on oral amiodarone and colchicine.
