COVID-19: Global radiation oncology’s targeted response for pandemic preparedness

Abstract: As the global COVID-19 pandemic escalates there is a need within radiation oncology to work to support our patients in the best way possible.Measures are required to reduce infection spread between patients and within the workforce. “…In emergency medical situations, where the risk is that of not treating the patient with prostate cancer, delaying his therapy or initiating him with an inappropriate hormonal therapy, it is recommended to adopt radiotherapy schemes based on scientific evidence of efficacy, speed of execution and minimal toxicity [14]. Our analysis confirms that ultrahypofractionation schedule, as SBRT, in prostate cancer allows to obtain excellent result both in terms of acute and late toxicity and also in terms of oncological results.…”

“…Moreover, the authors wanted to evaluate the long-term results before adopting the scheme as routine in the selected cases with early prostate carcinoma. It might be questionable the opportunity to plan a radical treatment in some of these patients (mainly those classified as very low and low risk) when a good alternative is represented by active surveillance or in which the treatment could be postponed [14]. In our experience, however, the patients have strongly chosen an active treatment and, in daily practice, the same patients ask for stereotactic technique.…”

“…External beam RT mitigates some of these risks, however patients are subject to multiple, repeated outpatient hospital visits. Many RT groups have instituted short course interim policies leaning heavily on stereotactic body RT techniques 34 . The optimal choice and timing of treatment ultimately requires shared decision making and multidisciplinary collaboration.…”

“…Sudden loss of smell, without nasal obstruction and total disappearance of taste, are also symptoms that have been observed in patients. In people developing more severe forms, respiratory difficulties are found, which can lead to hospitalization in intensive care and death (Landry et al, 2020;Sharifi-Razavi et al, 2020;Simcock et al, 2020;World Health Organization, 2020).…”
