Background. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that impairs health. The global prevalence of obesity has been increasing significantly among all age groups. Further more, obesity is a comorbid factor for numerous diseases, including cardiovascular and periodontal pathologies.Objectives. The present study aimed to investigate the influence of overweight and obesity on the peri odontium of young adults in relation to the functional state of the cardiovascular system. Material and methods.The oral health status of 132 males and females aged 18-22 years was exa mined. They were divided into 4 groups according to their body mass index (BMI): normal weight; over weight; class I obesity; and class II obesity. A periodontal chart, the records on oral hygiene and caries, and periodontal indices were provided for each participant. The main functional parameters of the cardiovascu lar system were measured before and after the dental examination.Results. Overweight or obesity did not affect the intensity of caries in young adults. The prevalence and severity of gingivitis were significantly higher in obese individuals. A moderate correlation was found be tween gingivitis and BMI in patients with class I and II obesity. Disturbances in the cardiovascular system function and in the autonomic nervous system tone were also diagnosed in obese patients. An impaired vascular response and significant functional changes in the cardiovascular system developed against the background of obesity. These changes show the development of subcompensation in young adults with obesity.Conclusions. In obese individuals, significantly worse oral hygiene was observed as compared to normal BMI patients. Moreover, the clinical manifestation and intensity of gingivitis in obese individuals were high even in those with satisfactory oral hygiene. In young obese individuals, the periodontal disease mani fested as gingivitis is due to significant adaptive and compensatory mechanisms.

A pandemia da Covid-19, iniciou-se pela proliferação global do SARS-CoV-2. Sua transmissão ocorre por meio de gotículas projetadas nas entradas principais, sendo estas a cavidade oral, nariz ou olhos, levando ao primeiro contato e colonização de células pelo vírus. O SARS-CoV-2 interage com a microbiota pulmonar e oral por meio de mecanismos que envolvem alterações nas citocinas junto a respostas de células T e efeitos das condições do hospedeiro como envelhecimento e alterações do microbioma oral. Dado a isso, é importante entender essa relação, a fim de esclarecer o papel da cavidade bucal como portal de entrada para o SARS-CoV-2. Objetivo: Analisar, por meio da literatura científica, a possível correlação entre a condição de saúde bucal e o agravamento da Covid-19. Metodologia: foram utilizados como descritores: “COVID-19” ou “Coronavirus” e “Oral hygiene”, nas bases de dados LILACS/BVS e PUBMED. 10 artigos foram selecionados para o trabalho, de acordo com os critérios de inclusão adotados. Resultados: A cavidade bucal tem papel importante na patogênese da Covid-19 por abrigar os receptores da enzima conversora de angiotensina 2 (ACE-2), proteína que atua como uma “porta de entrada” do vírus e viabiliza a sua invasão nas células do hospedeiro. Portanto, conclui-se que a microbiota oral pode influenciar na gravidade da Covid-19, de maneira que a adoção de protocolos criteriosos de higiene bucal no manejo dos pacientes torna-se imprescindível, a fim de contribuir para a prevenção de fatores agravantes, e consequentemente, para a melhoria da condição sistêmica apresentada.

Background 2019 Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The COVID-19 pandemic has already had a serious influence on human existence, causing a huge public health concern for countries all around the world. Because SARS-CoV-2 infection can be spread by contact with the oral cavity, the link between oral illness and COVID-19 is gaining traction. Through bioinformatics approaches, we explored the possible molecular mechanisms linking the COVID-19 and periodontitis to provide the basis and direction for future research. Methods Transcriptomic data from blood samples of patients with COVID-19 and periodontitis was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. The shared differentially expressed genes were identified. The analysis of Gene Ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genesand Genomes pathway, and protein–protein interaction network was conducted for the shared differentially expressed genes. Top 5 hub genes were selected through Maximal Clique Centrality algorithm. Then mRNA-miRNA network of the hub genes was established based on miRDB database, miRTarbase database and Targetscan database. The Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis was used to discover possible biomarkers, which were then investigated in relation to immune-related genes. Results Fifty-six shared genes were identified through differential expression analysis in COVID-19 and periodontitis. The function of these genes was enriched in regulation of hormone secretion, regulation of secretion by cell. Myozenin 2 was identified through Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression Analysis, which was down-regulated in both COVID-19 and periodontitis. There was a positive correlation between Myozenin 2 and the biomarker of activated B cell, memory B cell, effector memory CD4 T cell, Type 17 helper cell, T follicular helper cell and Type 2 helper cell. Conclusion By bioinformatics analysis, Myozenin 2 is predicted to correlate to the pathogenesis and immune infiltrating of COVID-19 and periodontitis. However, more clinical and experimental researches are needed to validate the function of Myozenin 2.
