Cover Picture: Silica‐Based Mesoporous Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Materials (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 20/2006)

Abstract: Like Honeycomb is how the pore structures of silica‐based mesoporous organic–inorganic hybrid materials often appear. In the Review on page 3216 ff., M. Fröba and co‐workers give an overview of their preparation. The cover picture shows hybrids whose pores are functionalized with cyclam (ligand), sulforhodamine B (laser die), and a cinchona derivative (for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis). Particular attention is given to the class of periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs).

“…With the MPTMS molecules added, hydrophobic effect will inevitably lead to the directional movement of MPTMS molecules toward CTAB tightly bound to the surface of silica particles by electrostatic interaction. As the on-going hydrolysis and polycondensation reaction continue, more micelles composed of CTAB molecules would gradually be incorporated into the silica spheres [11]. As a result, the more MPTMS molecules introduced, the larger the pore and volume of silica particles become after the surfactant removal.…”

“…Las estructuras MBG están generando un especial interés para aplicaciones de liberación de fármacos, ya que su gran ordenación mesoporosa alberga una complicada red de cavidades que pueden albergar diferentes tipos de moléculas para su posterior liberación, demostrando su potencial como sistemas de liberación controlada [72,73]. Para mejorar el control sobre los perfiles de carga y liberación es posible funcionalizar las paredes de los mesoporos con procesos basados en el silanol [78].…”
