Correlation of the degree of dyspnea with health‐related quality of life, functional abilities, and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide in patients with systemic sclerosis and active alveolitis: Results from the scleroderma lung study

Abstract: Objective. To determine whether baseline selfassessment measures of health status and physiologic indices of disease severity in alveolitis-positive patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) correlate with the severity of their dyspnea, and to quantify functional impairment in patients with scleroderma lung disease and compare it with that in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Methods. SSc patients (n ‫؍‬ 138) with diffuse (n ‫؍‬ 81) or limited (n ‫؍‬ 57) cutaneous disease and active alveo… Show more

“…23,32,33 This would be especially important in the few patients in whom the blind had to be removed because of the intention-to-treat principle, but these comprised only two patients who were unblinded after receiving a year of PLA and then received CYC. The cough score is a subjective measurement, the resolution of which may not be sufficiently sensitive to detect clinically relevant changes in cough frequency or severity.…”

“…23 Cough severity was graded on a 0-to-3 scale, and cough frequency and phlegm production were graded on 1-to-3 scales ( Fig 1 ). Health-related quality of life was assessed with two instruments: the Medical Outcomes 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey 24 and the Disability Index of the Health Assessment Questionnaire, a measure of functional status that targets the musculoskeletal system and was designed for patients with SSc.…”

“…Of the few HRQOL studies performed in persons with SSc to date, all have assessed health status (10,11,31) and none have assessed health values. Our results confirm previous findings that individuals with SSc have poor physical functioning (mean PCS score 36.9) and low-normal mental health (mean MCS score 45.5) (10,11).…”

“…Patients with SSc are classified according to the extent of skin involvement: limited SSc (lSSc), with no detectable skin involvement; limited cutaneous SSc tients with lung disease (30). However, the relevance of using the 2 aggregate scores, PCS and MCS, in SSc has not been demonstrated.…”
