Correlation of serum prostate-specific antigen level in various prostate pathology in elderly men

Abstract: Background: Carcinoma of prostate is one of common tumors of old age in men. With digital rectal examination (DRE) prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a major screening tool for prostate cancer. While Trans Rectal Ultra Sound (TRUS)guided needle biopsies of prostate are considered gold standard for the diagnosis of prostate cancers. Objectives: To determine the spectrum of pathological lesions in TRUS-guided needle biopsies of prostate in men with increased serum PSA levels (≥ 4 ng/ml) with or without symptoms … Show more

“…In present study, 50.86% cases were benign and 49.14% cases were malignant, comparable to 60.91% benign cases and 37.27% malignant cases in the study done by Varsha Khant et al (2017). [6] Another study by Dr. Atchyuta .M et al (2016) [7] had 79.7% benign cases and 20.3% malignant cases. Geographical location and environment may account for this uneven distribution of benign and malignant lesions.…”

“…Geographical location and environment may account for this uneven distribution of benign and malignant lesions. The above studies by Varsha Khant et al (2017) [6] and Atchyuta .M et al(2016) [7] included prostatic biopsies as well as prostate www.pacificejournals.com/apalm eISSN: 2349-6983; pISSN: 2394-6466 chips(Transrectal Urethral Resection of Prostate chips), whereas we included only TRUS biopsies. This can also account for more benign cases in these studies.…”

“…Outcome of some studies are similar to our findings of 73.91%. 11,14 In older age group involvement of chronic prostatitis associated with nodular hyperplasia is a common finding. There were 15.21% cases of this type in this series.…”

“…Prostate specific antigen assessment released from this gland is helpful in screening and detection of lesion. 11 However, its variability may not be specific for cancer detection as it may be raised in various other disease of prostate. The clinic-pathologic parameters like Gleason grading, imaging finding and molecular markers are combined together to provide better and more accurate prognosis of tumor and ultimately to make proper treatment and management course.…”
