Correlation of narrow band imaging endoscopy and histopathology in the diagnosis of nonerosive reflux disease

Abstract: Background /Aim:Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a novel, innovative high-resolution endoscopic technique, which utilizes spectral narrow band filter for the visualization of mucosal patterns and microvasculature. Nonerosive reflux disease (NERD) is a type of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and it is characterized by reflux symptoms without mucosal breaks on white light endoscopy (WLE). Biopsies from distal esophagus of GERD patients show group of histologic features such as basal cell hyperplasia, elongati… Show more

“…It was evidenced that none of the findings verified was significant in relation to the characteristic histological alterations of GERD. The study revealed histological changes compatible with GERD in 70.4% of the patients [36].…”

“…Baseline impedance is highly sensitive in detecting GERC and distinguishing between different phenotypes, with a reported specificity of 95% and a positive predictive value of 96% ( Naik et al, 2019 ). Low baseline impedance has been associated with LES insufficiency, esophageal hypersensitivity, abnormal esophageal acid exposure, typical GERD symptoms, and positive acid perfusion tests ( Woodland et al, 2013 ; Zhong et al, 2013 ; Arul et al, 2015 ; Lottrup et al, 2017 ). The role of MI in GERC needs further investigation.…”
