Correlation between the state of cluster development and national competitiveness in the Global Competitiveness Report of the World Economic Forum 2012–2013

Abstract: This paper explores the correlation between state of cluster development in a country and its national competitiveness. Our research hypothesis is that high positive correlation exists between cluster development and national competiveness, meaning that the countries in which clusters are deep and well-developed are at the same time countries that have a high national competitiveness in certain segments of industry and vice versa.

“…Clustering strategies general focus on firms' competitiveness and innovation (Bosch, Capel, Cougoule, Ferrari, & Solanas, 2012;Paraubosšić, Cvijanović, Mihailović, & Veljković, 2014;Paraušić et al, 2014;Sölvell, Lindqvist, & Ketels, 2003) depending on geographical proximity and increased interaction often based on trust (Möhring, 2005). Nevertheless, in today's world, national borders have been eroding, and their importance regarding affecting a nation's economic performance is diminishing (Clement, 1999;McCann, 2008).…”

“…It is far from a free-floating culture. Paraušić et al (2014) argues that the coefficient of a simple linear correlation indicates that there is a strong positive correlation in the sample between state cluster development in a country and its national competitiveness.…”

“…Knowledge-based economies in rapidly changing markets require organisation and strategies to effectively use knowledge and skills (Kareem & Mijbas, 2019). Many countries have increased their national competitiveness such as Israel, the Netherlands, Finland, and Germany, driven by education and skilled labour contributing to high level of productivity and investments in R&D, which further promotes innovative world-class clusters development (Paraušić et al, 2014). Camagni (2008) argues that institutions, rules and norms create conditions for reduction of market transaction costs.…”

“…According to Porter there are four main determinants of competitiveness of enterprises: their strategy, structure and rivalry, the demand conditions they face, the factor supply conditions they encounter, and the conditions of related industries. Paraušić, Cvijanović, Mihailović, and Veljković (2014) stated that theories of competitiveness and economic growth and development have changed and evolved over time. In response to the question of which production factors contribute most to economic prosperity of a country and its competitiveness, the researchers firstly considered the natural resources and the importance of production factors availability (capital accumulation enables specialisation and division of labour and contributes to a higher productivity).…”
