Abstract: The principles of the rheology measurements are described in Weidner, et al. (1994a; 1997). Deviatoric stress is introduced by compression of a powder _•ample and owes its origin to local stress concentrations that are necessary to accommodate the grain to grain contacts. The manifestation of the stress field is a broadening of the x-ray diffraction peak, indicating a distribution of strain corresponding to a particular set of diffraction planes.
