Coronary Arterial Stents: Safety and Artifacts during MR Imaging

Abstract: The studied coronary stents were not influenced by heating or motion during 1.5-T MR imaging. Artifact size differed according to the type and size of the stent and the MR imaging sequence used. Thus, patients with these stents can be safely examined.

“…Many different types of intravascular and intracavitary coils and stents have been evaluated for safety with MR systems at 1.5-T or less (6,14,18,19,(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42). Additionally, a GDC tested at 3.0-T was reported to be safe for this environment (21).…”

“…Thus, it is unlikely that they would become moved or dislodged as a result of being attracted by static magnetic fields of MR systems up to 1.5-T (6,14,18,19,(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42). Furthermore, there has never been a report of such an incident.…”

“…13 In a study of patients at day 3 post-coronary stent deployment, there was no increase in adverse events compared to control groups after seven months follow up. 14 15 The development of new mixed alloy coronary stents incorporating cobalt and other metals will need evaluation for CMR compatibility, but as the mass of the stent is small, it is unlikely that results will be different. Therefore, for correctly deployed coronary stents, there is a very low likelihood of movement or heating and it is safe to perform CMR immediately after placement.…”
