Corneal transplantation: study of the data of a regional eye bank for the year 2013 and analysis of the evolution of the adverse events reported in France since 2010

Abstract: To analyze the data of the adverse events collected in a single major eye bank (EFS Bourgogne Franche Comté, Besançon, France) for the year 2013 and to report the French data of biovigilance provided by the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) between 2010 and 2013. we have set up a study of adverse events in 2013, in collaboration with a single eye bank (EFS Bourgogne Franche Comté, Besançon, France). A survey was sent to the surgeon for each delivered corneal button by the e… Show more

“…Once the scar is formed, complicated surgical procedures such as penetrating keratoplasty with either the application of the amniotic membrane for fast re-epithelialization or replacement with a donor cornea are the options. However, both these options are associated with their complications, availability, and expenses . Our focus has been to develop a formulation that can be easily administered to prevent scar formation immediately after the corneal injury with damage to the underlying the acellular collagenous Bowman layer.…”

“…More importantly, the registries enable examination and monitoring for any significant postoperative adverse events such as infection and endophthalmitis (Chen et al, 2015 ; Gauthier et al, 2017 ; Song et al, 2021 ). Edelstein et al ( 2016 ) previously conducted a study of 354,390 keratoplasty based on the data from the Eye Bank Association of America, analyzing all adverse events following all types of keratoplasty.…”

“…Particularly, ophthalmic implants, such as artificial cornea and intraocular lens, lose their high light transmittance and take on risk of secondary infection due to the accumulation of protein, bacteria, and/or fungi on the surface. Such phenomena often lead to multiple operations, causing serious damage to the tissues and huge economic pressure to the patients [2][3][4].…”
