Abstract

“…The donor corneas were allocated without the matching of ABO blood types of the donors and recipients. The compatible combinations of blood types for the The corneal transplantations were classified into 2 groups, involving highrisk and low-risk (Havener et al 1958). High-risk transplantations were those recipients who had corneal vascularization in 2 or more quadrants of the cornea preoperatively or who had a history of graft failure.…”

“…A corneal graft was defined as rejected when it became edematous and showed signs of immunological rejection such as a rejection line, infiltratious keratic precipitates, or anterior segment inflam-mation (Havener et al 1958). A diagnosis of rejection was made only if the transplant had remained clear for at least 2 weeks after surgery.…”

“…IT has been shown that human cornea carries blood-group specific antigens corresponding to those of red blood cells Gurevitch, 1956, 1957) and the clinical significance of these findings has been discussed by various authors (Havener, Stine, and Weiss, 1958;Mehri, Becker, and Oglesby, 1959).…”

“…Nelken et al (1956), Nelken et al (1957), Nemetz (1958, and Sabnis & Basu (1963) demonstrated A and B blood group specific substances in human corneas, and following ABO incompatible transplantations a rise in the titer of the isoagglutinins has been reported (Klen 1955, Nelken et al 1957. However, the reports on the importance of ABO incompatibility for the clinical results of corneal transplantations have been controversial (Havener et al 1958, Mehri et al 1959, Votockova & Karel 1962, Richter 1965, Meyer 1966, Alberth 1968, and most often transplantation is carried out regardless of the ABO groups of the donor and the recipient. Cornea specific precipitating antibodies against donor cornea have been shown by several authors (Tsutsui & Watanabe 1961, Nelken & Nelken 1965, Meyer 1966, but their clinical significance is unknown.…”
