Background The psychological perspective plays a crucial role in designing therapy for people suffering from multiple sclerosis. The aim of the article is to distinguish different psychological profiles of patients. Participants and procedure The study was conducted using the paper-and-pencil method on 77 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis. The theory we applied was Hobfoll’s conservation of resources theory. We also analyzed the impact of personal and situational variables on the functioning of patients with different kinds of resources. Results Cluster analysis was used to construct the profiles of patients. Based on statistical analyses using the k-means method, we distinguished: Profile 1, with a prevalence of resource losses (n = 30), Profile 2, covering people who value their resources the most (n = 25), and Profile 3, with a prevalence of resource gains (n = 18). Conclusions The obtained psychological profiles reflect the varied dynamics of the patients’ functioning and should inspire an improvement of multidisciplinary rehabilitation.

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence and severity of depressive symptoms among patients admitted to the HULW-UFPB outpatient neurology service due to varied complaints. The sociodemographic and epidemiological profile of this population was further evaluated. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, qualitative and quantitative study carried out from March 2013 to August 2015, with the application of the Beck-II Depression Inventory in 235 patients randomly selected between 17 and 59 years of age. The data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate inferential statistics. Results: There was a prevalence of women (70% of respondents), with an average of 40.1 years, married, and with a high school education; 48% had some work activity, with a work journey of two shifts (22.1%). Signs of minimal or absent depression were observed in 51.9% of the cases; while mild, moderate and severe symptoms were found in 23.4%, 15.7%, and 8.9% of the patients evaluated. Conclusion: Depressive symptoms reported in this study were found to be about 5 to 9 times more prevalent than those reported in the literature, with an alarming percentage of severe depressive symptoms. These findings indicate the presence of an important public health problem and should further guide the investigation of the underestimated depressive complaints in this population.

Background:The present study aimed to investigate personality traits and coping strategies in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who were admitted to Sina hospital compared with healthy individuals. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to compare personality characteristics and coping strategies between patients with MS and healthy controls. Materials and Methods:The study sample included 55 patients with MS and 57 matched healthy control individuals. The data were gathered via a demographic form, the ways of coping questionnaire, and the NEO five-factor inventory. The data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), Pearson's correlation coefficient, and logistic regression. Results: No significant differences in personality characteristics were observed between patients and healthy controls (all P > 0.05). Only the coping strategy subscale of Distancing was significant between patients and healthy controls (P < 0.05; all other subscales P > 0.05). Only the Neuroticism personality trait and the Distancing coping strategy were predictive of group membership (i.e., healthy or patient). Conclusions:Our study suggests that the personality traits of patients with MS and healthy individuals are not significantly different. Patients with MS are likely to use the same coping strategies as healthy individuals, except in the subscale of Distancing.
