The seasonal cycles of reproduction of the dominant copepods Acartia clausi, Temora longicornis, Centropages hamatus, C. typicus and Pseudocalanus spp. were studied at Helgoland Roads, southern North Sea. Egg production rate, clutch size, number of spawning females and prosome length were compared with temperature and phytoplankton concentration. Female A. clausi, T. longicornis and Pseudocalanus spp. were present all year round. T. longicornis and Pseudocalanus spp. bred continuously throughout the year, although egg production rates and the proportion of spawning females were low in winter. A. clausi did not spawn between the end of September and the end of January. Female C. hamatus were absent from the water column from November to May, and C. typicus from February to August. As the latter 3 species spawn year round in warmer regions, low temperature inhibition of reproduction is suggested for Helgoland, where winter temperatures are below 0°C. Maximum egg production was observed in all species, except the late-arriving C. typicus, in April/May, when females were largest. Significant correlations were only obtained between clutch size or egg production rate and prosome length, which in turn was correlated with temperature. It is therefore concluded that for Helgoland waters temperature controlled egg production by its effect on prosome length, and that food conditions were not limiting.

The feeding ecology of fishes inhabiting the 300700 m deep shelf trough of the central Skagerrak (northeastern North Sea) was investigated to identify major trophic pathways and analyse the relative significance of epipelagic, mesopelagic and benthic food sources. Two benthopelagic fish species, roundnose grenadier, Coryphaenoides rupestris, and greater silver smelt, Argentina silus, were highly dominant in this area, but the squalid shark Etmopterus spinax, the chimaera, Chimaera monstrosa, and the witch flounder, Glyptocephalus cynoglossus were also characteristic members of the deep fish assemblage.Vertically migrating euphausids, shrimps (i.e. Pasiphaea sp.), copepods and hyperid amphipods were found to provide direct links between the epipelagic production and the deep-living roundnose grenadier. Prominent benthopelagic prey included the omnivorous Pandalus borealis and Sabinea sarsi. The trophic position of the greater silver smelt was uncertain because a high fraction of the stomach contents were unidentifiable, but a probable food source was thought to be mesopelagic and benthopelagic gelatinous plankton. Etmopterus spinax fed mostly on micronektonic crustaceans such as euphausids, but may have also scavenged on fish carcasses. Both the witch flounder and Chimaera monstrosa were benthophages feeding on a great variety of polychaetes, bivalves, gammarid amphipods and other medium-sized benthic prey.Trophic transfer patterns observed in the Skagerrak were compared with results from slope waters and deep fjords.

This study compares the effect of temperature on the post-embryonic development time and weight-specific growth rate in 2 populations of Acartia clausi from different biogeographic areas (northern and southern Europe). Development was followed from nauplius I to adult at 3 temperatures (10, 15 and 18°C) at saturating food conditions. The relationship between development time and temperature was established by fitting Belehradek's function. The northern population had a shorter generation time at all temperatures. At 10°C, the development time was estimated to be 33.9 and 36.4 d decreasing to 16.3 and 17.4 d at 18°C for the northern and southern populations, respectively. Prosome length decreased with temperature, and the southern population had longer individuals at all temperatures. ANCOVA revealed a significant (p < 0.001) positive effect of temperature on the growth rates, and nauplii grew faster than copepodites (except at 18°C in the southern population and 20°C in the northern population). Significant differences between populations were noted during larval growth, with nauplii from the north growing faster at high temperatures (18°C).
