Hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation in combination with green ammonia as a seasonal energy storage vector offers an excellent opportunity to decrease the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). In this work, an analysis is performed to find the most cost-effective configuration of powerto-ammonia-to-power (P2A2P). In P2A2P, wind and solar resources are combined with energy storage to design a resilient electricity grid. For daily generation, batteries are utilized for energy storage, whereas ammonia is employed to cope with seasonal fluctuations. The costs of energy storage capacity have a significant influence on the LCOE. Therefore, this work studies the effect of solar/wind hybrid generation systems and energy storage capacity on the LCOE. A base case of the region of De Aar in South Africa was selected because this inland location has excellent wind and solar resources. The optimized battolyzer and Haber−Bosch design capacity led to an overall load factor of 20− 30%. At a 30% load factor, a hybrid system with 37% wind-based and 63% solar-based energy generation capacity was the most costeffective configuration, resulting in a LCOE of 0.15 USD/kWh at a 5% annual discount rate. In an optimistic scenario for PV costs, the LCOE achieved is essentially unaltered (0.14 USD/kWh), while the contribution of wind and PV changes to 25 and 75%, respectively. This analysis indicates that appropriate designing of hybrid energy solutions will play a key role in determining the final energy storage capacities needed to reduce the LCOE. While these costs for LCOE are above those reported for coal-powered electricity in South Africa (e.g., 0.072 USD/kWh for businesses and 0.151 USD/kWh for households), a carbon tax of 50 USD/ton of CO 2 can increase these costs to 0.102 and 0.191 USD/kWh, rendering a more promising outlook for the P2A2P concept.

Escalating climate impacts prompt governments to act as seen in the fifth Conference of the Parties (COP), demanding eco-friendly practices to limit warming to 1.5°C. Carbon accounting is vital for global sustainability, requiring robust national monitoring of stocks and emissions. Remote sensing technology and satellite data enable modeling terrestrial carbon reserves, though challenges remain for coastal areas due to water attenuation. Ongoing studies aim to prove the technology's viability, despite accuracy issues in capturing shallow coastal environments. With this being gap, this study developed a methodology to map a coastal environment using satellite data and machine learning. Sentinel-2 MSI, an open-source multispectral image, was utilized in this study. Geospatial derivatives such as ratios of the visible bands, bathymetry model using the Stumpf's ratio and principal components which contained at least 90% of uncorrelated data were also integrated in the modeling process to improve benthic feature separability. Different combinations of the datasets were also explored in this study. Benthic habitat models were produced using Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) machine learning algorithms for each variable combination. The generated models generated overall accuracies ranging from 0.69 to 0.74 and 0.22 to 0.68 respectively. This translated to a maximum percent difference of 77% for the case of RGB model only and a minimum of 8% using all the variables. In terms of using different variable combinations, RF exhibited robust performance showing relatively consistent results compared to SVM which produced a wide range of accuracy values across the different models.

Purpose Industries worldwide have been striving to serve the increasing demand of consumers alongside providing importance to environmental issues. Yet, there are concern-raising changes on the planet, such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting in a temperature rise. India remains a vital party of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change. Henceforth, the paper aims to study the increased emissions of GHG in Puducherry, an Indian Union Territory that faces tremendous pressure owing to its denser population. Design/methodology/approach The research is designed as a case study conducted in a tyre manufacturing unit in Puducherry. The industrial sector was chosen, as it is the largest contributor (78%) of the total GHG emissions. Case studies were chosen to analyse the GHG emissions and the effects of implementing the policies and imposing interventions over time. The identified areas of improvement, proposed changes and the implemented ones with the results over a three-year period have been discussed. Findings The present study’s GHG inventorisation for Puducherry paved the way for preparing mitigation and adaptation plans. A total of 21 and 48 changes were incorporated to conserve fuel and power, respectively. A significant 11% reduction in power consumption and 1,113,008/litres of furnace oil was achieved. This translates to 5,115 tCO2 and 3,306 tCO2, respectively. Practical implications This research will help to improve the importance of climate change management in the manufacturing sector, and it will pave the way for achieving effective sustainable practices. Originality/value Such case studies could cumulatively impact the policy directives/ interventions on GHG emissions. Though this seems a small leap, putting them into practice at firm levels would contribute significantly towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
