Empathy plays a key role in maintaining close relationships and promoting prosocial conflict resolution. However, research has not addressed the potential emotional cost of adolescents' high empathy, particularly when relationships are characterized by more frequent conflict. The present 6-year longitudinal study (N = 467) investigated whether conflict with parents predicted emotion dysregulation more strongly for high-empathy adolescents than for lower-empathy adolescents. Emotion dysregulation was operationalized at both the experiential level, using mood diary data collected for 3 weeks each year, and at the dispositional level, using annual self-report measures. In line with predictions, we found that more frequent adolescent-parent conflict predicted greater day-to-day mood variability and dispositional difficulties in emotion regulation for high-empathy adolescents, but not for average- and low-empathy adolescents. Mood variability and difficulties in emotion regulation, in turn, also predicted increased conflict with parents. These links were not moderated by empathy. Moreover, our research allowed for a novel investigation of the interplay between experiential and dispositional emotion dysregulation. Day-to-day mood variability predicted increasing dispositional difficulties in emotion regulation over time, which suggests that experiential dysregulation becomes consolidated into dispositional difficulties in emotion regulation. Moderated mediation analyses revealed that, for high-empathy adolescents, conflict was a driver of this dysregulation consolidation process. Finally, emotion dysregulation played a role in overtime conflict maintenance for high-empathy adolescents. This suggests that, through emotion dysregulation, high empathy may paradoxically also contribute to maintaining negative adolescent-parent interactions. Parenting adolescents with ASD: A multimethod study

A number of studies have concluded that parents of children with ASD experience high levels of parenting stress. However, little is known about their parenting behaviors. Especially parenting in adolescence remains under investigated, although this period is associated with additional challenges for both adolescents and their parents. In this study, 44 adolescents with ASD and a control group of 38 adolescents without ASD, aged 12-16 years old, participated together with their mother. We compared parenting behaviors between the two groups, based on observations of mother-child interactions and a questionnaire that was filled out by the mother. During the observation, mothers of adolescents with ASD showed more sensitivity and creativity, compared to the control group. In addition, the questionnaire responses indicated that mothers in the ASD group adapted the environment more by for example, establishing routines. Furthermore, this study investigated the role of parenting stress and ASD characteristics of the mother on parenting behavior. Parenting stress was associated with less self-reported positive parenting. Higher levels of ASD characteristics of the mother were related to more negativity and less sensitivity during the observation in both groups, and more self-reported harsh punishment and adapting the environment in the control group only.

Este artigo apresenta o Questionário de Estilos Educativos Parentais revisto (QEEP-r), que oferece uma medida da perceção dos adolescentes quanto aos estilos educativos parentais (tal como a sua primeira versão, o QEEP), mas distinguindo o alvo da avaliação em pai e mãe e focando a dimensão da promoção da autonomia. São estudadas as propriedades psicométricas e avaliada a invariância da escala quanto aos estilos educativos do pai e aos estilos educativos da mãe. Um total de 664 participantes, alunos do ensino básico e secundário de seis escolas dos distritos de Braga e Porto, com idades compreendidas entre os 12 e os 18 anos (M=15.31, DP=1.28), do género feminino (54.20%) e masculino (43.50%) preencheu o QEEP-r. Os resultados da análise fatorial confirmatória evidenciam uma estrutura tridimensional do QEEP-r e propriedades psicométricas adequadas. A estrutura tridimensional inclui um fator de autonomia psicológica, um fator de clima positivo e um fator de conhecimento. Do ponto de vista da invariância da medida foi identificada a invariância configural e a invariância métrica, mas não a invariância escalar ou residual. Este instrumento é relevante no contexto da investigação em língua portuguesa sobre os EEP, na medida em que permite avaliar a perceção dos adolescentes até aos 18 anos de idade sobre os EEP dos pais, através de duas escalas (pai e mãe) entre as quais se constata invariância métrica.
