Control Strategy for Five-Phase Dual-Stator Winding Induction Starter/Generator System

Abstract: This paper presents an integrated control strategy for a starter/generator (S/G) system based on five-phase dual-stator winding induction machine (FPDWIM). The FPDWIM has a cage-type rotor and two sets of stator windings. One is a five-phase control winding (CW) and the other is a five-phase power winding (PW). In the starting mode, the FPDWIM works as a motor. The CW provides both active power and reactive power to drive the engine. In the generating mode, the CW mainly handles reactive power while the PW out… Show more

“…An electric machine, usually a synchronous generator [44]- [46], is coupled to the main engine to accelerate the rotor from a standstill until the start velocity (ωstart in Fig. 13) is attained (other machines, such as induction [47], [48] and switched reluctance machines [13], [49] with bidirectional power electronics, are also linked). Once the engine reaches the appropriate velocity, self-sustaining combustion can occur.…”

“…Moreover, by adopting a multiphase architecture, they can remarkably boost the reliability and, more particularly, include the possibility to operate under single-phase fault circumstances [151]. With the aim of enhancing the internal power flow, a double set of stator windings was proposed in [152].…”

“…The overload capability and faulty operation has been significantly improved with a multi-phase architecture [47]. A dual stator winding set is proposed to improve the power flow of the S/G [48].…”
