Control of a Switched Reluctance Generator for Variable-Speed Wind Energy Applications

Abstract: This paper presents a novel control system for the operation of a switched reluctance generator (SRG) driven by a variable speed wind turbine. The SRG is controlled to drive a wind energy conversion system (WECS) to the point of maximum aerodynamic efficiency using closed loop control of the power output. In the medium and low speed range, the SRG phase current is requlated using pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) control of the magnetizing voltage. For high speeds the generator is controlled using a single pulse mod… Show more

“…5 shows the curve of a function, and the aim is to find its global minimum value. In the figure, W 4 and W 5 will be optimized by improved GA to get new vectors which will be used for new around of WNN training as initial weights. With this iteration, the weights vectors will approach the global optimal value, namely W opt in the figure.…”

“…1 SRM has been widely applying in aircraft, 2 electric vehicle, 3 wind power generation 4 and so on. However, the electromagnetic characteristics of SRM are high nonlinear due to its doubly salient structure and heavy saturated magnetic field, which makes the accurate modeling of SRM a difficult task.…”

“…In a comparative study of electrical generators fitted to wind turbine systems, the authors in [5] conclude that the PMSG seems to be the most adapted candidate as illustrated in the Table 1 below taken from this reference, where the evaluation is based in the main characteristics of the WECS, each them is graded from 1 to 5 points. Recently, due to numerous advantages (simple structure, robustness, high performance, low cost), an innovative variable reluctance generator (VRG) [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] has been recognized to have potential for wind power applications. This explains our interest in the study of this type of generator.…”
