Abstract: An Integrated Bridge System (IBS) contains a fully duplicated Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). Although duplication should increase system reliability, reliability and availability are not improved. Proper ECDIS maintenance includes updating both: the information system and the provided chart system. This procedure, in practice, tends to decrease reliability and availability. A Markov ECDIS simulation model is given. A new design concept is presented and proposed. The entire ECDIS syste… Show more

“…Certain scientists have proposed a model of three ECDIS devices, where the third one is produced by a different manufacturer. That would significantly improve maritime safety [38]. The following example in this research is a reliability calculation for two ECDIS units considering the most optional value of the malfunction index.…”

“…It seems more useful to concentrate on improving the reliability of particular subsystems, rather than adding more back-up subsystems with lower reliability. The use of a so-called cold reserve system could be considered, as proposed by Sumic et al [8].…”

“…Sumic et al [8] applied a Markov model for reliability and availability analysis of an ECDIS system consisting of primary (master) and back-up (reserve) subsystems. Master and back-up subsystems form a parallel structure, by which, assuming each subsystem can stay in a working or failed state, the system takes one of four possible states.…”
