Contribution of future wide-swath altimetry missions to ocean analysis and forecasting

Abstract: Abstract. The impact of forthcoming wide-swath altimetry missions on the ocean analysis and forecasting system was investigated by means of OSSEs (observing system simulation experiments). These experiments were performed with a regional data assimilation system, implemented in the Iberian–Biscay–Ireland (IBI) region, at 1∕12∘ resolution using simulated observations derived from a fully eddy-resolving free simulation at 1∕36∘ resolution over the same region. The objective of the experiments was to assess the a… Show more

“…The impact of a constellation of two wide-swath altimetry missions was investigated with the same IBI data assimilation system (Bonaduce et al, 2018). This assessment was carried out as part of an ESA study on the potential role of wide-swath altimetry for the long-term (post 2030) evolution of the Copernicus satellite component.…”

“…The impact of forthcoming wide-swath altimetry missions was investigated at Mercator Ocean with OSSEs using a 1/12 •resolution regional ODAP system of the Iberian-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) region (Lellouche et al, 2013). The synthetic observations are derived from the Nature Run simulated by the same OGCM at 1/36 • resolution over the same region (Bonaduce et al, 2018). All the experiments assimilated the same synthetic observations of SST and temperature and salinity profiles.…”

“…This issue has received wide practical interest because of the forthcoming wide-swath altimetry planned for the Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission (SWOT; Fu et al 2009;Durand et al 2010;Qiu et al 2017). Altimetric observations of shorter mesoscale structures down to~15 km constitute a challenge for ocean analysis and forecasting (Bonaduce et al 2018) and can provide a valuable contribution to operational oceanography (Bell et al 2015;Le Traon et al 2017).…”
