Contribution of Calcite to the Particle-Size Spectrum of Lake Michigan Seston and Its Interactions with the Plankton

Abstract: We determined the contribution of calcite to the total particle-size spectrum of Lake Michigan seston during different seasons in 1978–83 and 1985, employing a novel Coulter counter method, to examine the intensity and ecological effects of calcite whitings that result from autogenic precipitation of calcite. The whitings were most intense during September, when 12–56% of the total particle volume was calcite. Overall, food web dynamics were more controlling of than controlled by whitings. Year-to-year variati… Show more

“…Typical of hard-water lakes, Zaca Lake undergoes frequent whitings in late spring and summer, during which carbonate compounds precipitate (Koschel et al 1983;Murphy et al 1983;Vanderploeg et al 1987). Zaca Lake whitings contribute substantially to light extinction and have large effects on TN : TP in the euphotic zone (see results).…”

“…Precipitation of carbonate compounds is commonly associated with increased algal 'uptake of carbon and resultant elevation of pH (Koschel et al 1983;Murphy et al 1983;Vanderploeg et al 1987). In Zaca Lake, the whiting period in both years began only after algal biomass began to increase after the clear-water phase (Fig.…”

“…Our bi-weekly sampling probably prevented full resolution of its occurrence within the individual years. Whiting has been linked to increases in primary production, temperature, or both (Vanderploeg et al 1987;Homa and Chapra 2011). Nucleation sites that kinetically promote the precipitation are critical (Homa and Chapra 2011).…”

“…No study has yet examined whether mineral ballast reduces the rate of remineralization driven by grazing by marine zooplankton, especially with respect to aggregates, although suspended particles of clay and calcite are known to interfere with feeding by Daphnia sp. in freshwater systems (Vanderploeg et al, 1987;Kirk, 1991).…”
