“…In consulting the original references reviewed by Muller (1981) to obtain a more precise dating of the early Plantago pollen, we found that the reference to the work of Krutzsch (1966c in Muller, 1981) was incorrectly stated, and Gray (1964) only specified upper Miocene. However, Van Campo (1976) identified pollen of Littorella and Plantago from about 6 Myr old deposits of Venta del Moro (Valencia, Spain) and Naud & Suc (1975) reported on Plantago pollen from Mirabel (Ardèche, France) and dated the deposits there to 6.4 ± 0.2 Myr, which is concordant with the date we assigned to the genus using a molecular clock approach, 5.47 Myr.…”

“…For each site we report the modern elevation, the age and depositional environment of the sediments, the Most Likely Value of MAT, the contemporaneous flora living in lowlands used for the comparison and the palaeo-elevation of the site. Mirabel (Naud and Suc, 1975) ∼0 sampled close to coarser deposits in which mineralogical and thermochronological studies were performed previously. Most samples were collected from marine deposits of the foreland basins of the developing Alps, where abundant detrital sediments were supplied by the developing orogenic drainage system.…”

“…Divergence times were calibrated using pollen records, as the Cistaceae are poor in macrofossil data. Helianthemum pollen has been identified from French Upper Miocene formations (11 Ma) (Naud & Suc, 1975) and Tuberaria pollen from Pliocene formations (5.3 Ma) in Germany (Menke, 1976). A macrofossil of a reproductive structure from Germany, described in Palibin (1909) as Cistinocarpum roemeri Conw., was used to constrain the Cistaceae crown group with a maximum age of 28 Ma (Middle Oligocene).…”
