A molecular phylogenetic study of Plantago L. (Plantaginaceae) analysed nucleotide variation in the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal and plastid trnL‐F regions. Included are 57 Plantago species, with two Aragoa species as the ingroup and three Veronica species as the outgroup. Phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony identified five major clades, corresponding to the taxonomic groups Plantago subgenera Plantago, Coronopus, Psyllium, Littorella and Bougueria. Aragoa is sister to genus Plantago. Plantago subgenus Littorella is sister to the other subgenera of Plantago. The results are in general correlated with a morphological phylogenetic study and iridoid glucoside patterns, but Plantago subgenus Albicans is paraphyletic and should be included in Plantago subgenus Psyllium sensu lato to obtain a monophyletic clade with six sections. Plantago section Hymenopsyllium is more closely related to section Gnaphaloides than to section Albicans. Plantago subgenus Bougueria is sister to subgenus Psyllium s.l. section Coronopus in Plantago subgenus Coronopus is subdivided in two series. Only some of the sections can be resolved into series. DNA variation within genus Plantago is high, a result that would not have been predicted on the basis of morphology, which is relatively stereotyped. If we calibrate a molecular clock based on the divergence of P. stauntoni, endemic to New Amsterdam in the southern Indian Ocean, we calculate the time of the split between Plantago and Aragoa to be 7.1 million years ago, which is congruent with the fossil record. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2002, 139, 323–338.

We evaluate the topographic evolution of the southwestern Alps using Eocene to Pleistocene pollen data combined with existing sedimentological, petrographic and detrital geo-and thermochronological data. We report 32 new pollen analyses from 10 sites completed by an existing dataset of 83 samples from 14 localities situated across the southwestern Alps, including both the pro-and the retro-foreland basins. The presence of microthermic tree pollen (mainly Abies, Picea) indicates that this part of the mountain belt attained elevations over 1900 m as early as the Oligocene. Inferred rapid surface uplift during the mid-Oligocene coincided with a previously documented brief phase of rapid erosional exhumation, when maximum erosion rates may have reached values of up to 1.5-2 km/Myr. Slower long-term average exhumation rates of ∼0.3 km/Myr since the Late Oligocene helped maintaining the high Alpine topography of the southwestern Alps until today. The relative abundances of meso-microthermic tree pollen (Cathaya, Cedrus and Tsuga) and microthermic tree pollen (Abies, Picea) in the pro-and retroforeland basin deposits, indicate that the present-day asymmetric topography, with a relatively gentle western flank and steeper eastern flank, was established early in the southwestern Alps, at least since ✩ Author contributions: All co-authors participated in writing the paper, in which S. Aim There are few biogeographical and evolutionary studies that address plant colonization and lineage origins in the Mediterranean. Cistus serves as an excellent model with which to study diaspore dispersal and distribution patterns of plants exhibiting no special long-distance dispersal mechanisms. Here we analyse the pattern of genetic variation and divergence times to infer whether the African-European disjunction of C. ladanifer L. is the result of long-distance dispersal or of vicariance events.Location Principally the Western Mediterranean region, with a focus on the Strait of Gibraltar.Methods We used DNA sequence phylogenetic approaches, based on plastid (rbcL/trnK-matK) and nuclear (ITS) sequence data sets, and the penalized likelihood method, to date the diversification of the 21 species of Cistus. Phylogenetic relationships and phylogeographical patterns in 47 populations of C. ladanifer were also analysed using two plastid DNA regions (trnS-trnG, trnK-matK). These sequence data were analysed using maximum parsimony, Bayesian inference and statistical parsimony.Results Dating estimates indicated divergence dates of the C. ladanifer lineage in the Pleistocene. Eight nucleotide-substitution haplotypes distributed on the European (four haplotypes) and African (five haplotypes) sides of the Strait of Gibraltar were revealed from C. ladanifer sequences. Both the haplotype network and the phylogenetic analyses depicted two main Cistus lineages distributed in both Europe and North Africa. An Iberian haplotype forms part of the North African lineage, and another haplotype distributed on both continents is related to the European lineage. Haplotype relationships with respect to outgroup sequences supported the hypothesis that the centre of genetic diversity is in northern Africa.Main conclusions Based on lineage divergence-time estimates and disassociation between geographical and lineage haplotype distributions, we inferred at least two intercontinental colonization events of C. ladanifer postdating the opening of the Strait of Gibraltar (c. 5 Ma). This result supports a hypothesis of long-distance dispersal rather than a hypothesis of vicariance. We argue that, despite limited dispersal abilities, preference for disturbed habitats was integral to historical colonization after the advent of the Mediterranean climate (c. 3.2 Ma), when Cistus species diverged and became established as a dominant element in the Mediterranean scrub.
