Contributing Factors to Police Homicide in Nigeria

Abstract: Police homicide has become a serious problem in Nigeria as cases of police killings continue to increase across the country. Against this background, this paper examines the scale of, and contributing factors to, police homicide in Nigeria. It argues that a combination of certain institutional and non-institutional factors are responsible for the growing vulnerability of police personnel in Nigeria to violent death. A comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria Police Force operations is advocated as a means of reversin… Show more

“…The high-handedness of some officers during their daily routines sometimes result in police extra-judicial killings and this often leads to violent confrontations between the police and the public (Ojedokun, 2014). It is commonplace for members of the public to build up counterstroke and reprisal attacks on police officers or to vent their frustration on police vehicles and stations, in response to perceived injustice from the police (Pratten, 2007;Oluwaniyi, 2011).…”

“…In general, the Nigeria police have a poor relationship with the community, and policing activities can hardly be seen as positive because of incessant police abuse and corrupt practices. The police do not see themselves as the agents for meeting citizens’ needs (Ojedokun, 2014). They perceive themselves as closely aligned to the people in power, and in most cases act as political instruments to suppress any opposition to influential individuals or groups (Smith, 2007).…”

“…This is the case with BWCs: The probability of getting caught assaulting an employee is substantially enhanced because a camera pointing at the transgressor provides unequivocal evidence of the assault. The assumption is therefore that reasonable individuals will not want to be caught and subsequently punished for misbehavior (Margarita, 1980; Ojedokun, 2014) - unless of course if the individual is purposely seeking to assault the employee, for ideological or personal reasons, and has something to gain from the recording and subsequent broadcasting of the assault, despite the punishment. In addition, staff members are less likely to behave in ways that would cause them to be injured, or that would provoke the client, patient, or customer to violate the codes of conduct.…”

“…The performance of the Nigeria Police Force is a bit encouraging when noting the puny circumstance in which a Police Officer carried out the policing task. This is because the insubstantial fund given to the Police Force has made them be in possession of inadequate and obsolete equipment and it has exposed most police officers to hazard at the detriment of violent criminals who were well equipped (Ojedokun, 2014). However, the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force were able to record crime cases, prosecute those cases and have cases closed upon investigation.…”
