The oil sands process‐affected water (OSPW), produced in large amounts during the extraction of crude oil from oil sands, is toxic mainly due to the presence of naphthenic acids (NAs), among other constituents. Ozonation is an effective method for the removal of NAs. To provide information for better control of NAs ozonation, models based on mass balance were developed in this study to predict the concentration profiles of commercial NAs, dissolved ozone, and gaseous ozone during the process. It was found that the developed models successfully predicted the concentrations of commercial NAs and gaseous ozone. For the dissolved ozone concentration, the developed model can predict the equilibrium concentrations well. However, the actual ozone consumption was higher than that predicted by the model at the initial period of the ozonation process. This deviation possibly resulted from the inapplicability of the gas‐liquid equilibrium conditions at the initial high rate stage of the reaction. In addition, the Henry's law constant and the overall mass transfer coefficient for the given system were determined experimentally. Also investigated in this study was the effects of inlet gaseous ozone concentration into the reactor on the removal of NAs and on the concentration of dissolved ozone. As expected, the increase in inlet ozone concentration enhanced the removal of NAs and increased the concentration of dissolved ozone.

Due to their adsorbent, ion exchange and catalytic properties zeolites are suitable for a variety of applications. We report on the photocatalytic activity of a readily available and inexpensive natural zeolite clinoptilolite (Z) containing SnO2 (Sn-Z). The Sn-Z samples with 3–15 wt. % of Sn were prepared by using a precipitation–deposition method. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the zeolite structure was unaffected by the introduction of the Sn-phase. Diffuse reflectance UV/VIS spectra of the Sn-Z samples confirmed the presence of SnO2 and X-Ray absorption spectroscopy analyses suggested that the SnO2 particles mainly resided on the surface of the clinoptilolite, while ATR-FTIR analysis gave some clues that part of the SnO2 phase was incorporated in the pores of the zeolite. The presence of SnO2 in Sn-Z increased both adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance which could be partially explained by higher surface area and partially with an increased negative potential of the surface. Adsorption and total degradation of methylene blue (MB) for the Sn-Z with the highest amount of Sn (15 wt.%) was about 30% and 45%, respectively, suggesting a synergetic effect between SnO2 and the clinoptilolite lattice. Reusability tests showed that these catalysts present a promising material for water purification.

The “reactive” dyeing of textiles requires an application of low-molecular-weight salts (LMWS), such as NaCl or Na2SO4, as necessary auxiliary agents. LMWS acts only as a remediation factor and remains in the dyeing effluents constitute brine. The main goal of the presented study was to investigate the application of ozone technology for industrial textile wastewater highly polluted by LMWS. The study was divided into two parts. In Part 1, by-products accumulated during multi-recycling of the same wastewater was investigated. While Part 2 was devoted to the scaling up of ozonation process, Part 1 concerns the efficiency of textile wastewater ozonation carried out as a repeatable process. The sequence of wastewater treatment and textile dyeing was repeated four times in a closed loop using the same process water. Although the wastewater decolorization was efficient in the subsequent ozonation cycles, some adverse effects, such as an increase in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and self-buffering at pH 9.5–10.0, were suggested the accumulation of by-products. The preliminary detection of by-products by thin layer chromatography (TLC) revealed phenol and naphthol derivatives as the transformation products (TPs) of ozonation. Dyeing of cotton using purified wastewater (brine) resulted in very good DECMC color matching parameters (under 1.16), but only in the first recycling loop, and then the TPs affected the process.
