“…The accumulation of Na + in leaves affects photosynthetic components such as enzymes, chlorophylls and carotenoids 52 , 53 . Furthermore, sodium uptake is associated with changes in other cation concentrations, and the antagonistic relationships between Na + and K + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ in several NaCl salt-stressed plants are well studied 50 , 54 56 . In the present study, a leaf damage of 50% and more (index 5–6) was simultaneously associated with excessive Na + concentration (usually well above 1.400 mg 100 g −1 d.w.) and significantly reduced levels of other cations, especially potassium.…”

“…There are pros and cons with washing. Sb and Pb on leaf/needle surfaces represent the total deposition (e.g., Hegrová et al [ 21 ]), which is available for consumption by herbivores. On the one hand it is of value to know how much of the leaf/needle Sb that has been integrated with the green tissue.…”

“…The accumulation of Sb in urban trees has not been investigated to any large extent, although [ 20 ] made observations of a range of elements, including Sb and Pb, in leaves and needles of trees in and near Barcelona, Spain. Hegrová et al [ 21 ] studied the contamination by a range of elements of near-road environments in the Czech Republic, in soil and Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) needles. They found the concentrations of Sb to be the most strongly increased out of 19 elements.…”
