The bromatological composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of millet cultivars were assessed for different nitrogen doses and two sowing seasons in the Ceres municipality of Goiás state, Brazil. The treatments consisted of three millet cultivars (ADR-7010, ADR-500 and BRS-1501), four nitrogen (N) doses (0, 50, 100 and 200kg ha -1 of N) and two sowing seasons. Three replicates and a randomised block design with a 3 x 4 x 2 factorial scheme were used. Two cuttings were performed in each season when plants reached an average height of 0.70 cm. No significant interactions were observed between or among cultivars for N doses and dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) contents. The DM, CP, NDF and ADF contents were significantly different between N doses. The DM and CP contents increased as the N dose increased to 100kg ha -1 . The maximum DM and CP contents were 11.14 and 22.53%, respectively. The NDF and ADF contents were higher in the control treatment (60.11 and 30.01%, respectively). In addition, the lowest ADF and NDF concentrations occurred at an N dose of 50kg ha -1 (56.33 and 30.23%, respectively). The DM contents were higher for the February sowing, with an average of 10.59%. The highest CP and ADF contents were found for the December sowing (22.46 and 31.58%, respectively). No significant differences were found for millet cultivars, N doses or sowing seasons. A significant interaction was found between sowing season and millet cultivar. RESUMOObjetivou-se avaliar a produção de massa seca (PMS) da planta inteira, determinar o nitrogênio contido (NC) no tecido da planta, a eficiência de conversão aparente do nitrogênio (ECAN) e a recuperação aparente do nitrogênio (RAN) de cultivares de milheto forrageiro submetidos às fontes de fósforo e doses de nitrogênio. O experimento realizado no ano agrícola de 2008 constou de um fatorial 2 × 3 × 4, em arranjo de blocos completos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos pelos cultivares ADR-7010; ADR-500 e BRS-1501, pelas fontes de fósforo superfosfato simples (SS) e termofosfato (TF), as quais foram aplicadas na dose de 70 kg.ha-1 e doses de N (0; 40; 80 e 160 kg.ha-¹ sob forma de uréia). A análise estatística revelou ausência de interações significativas entre as variáveis. Entre os cultivares avaliados, a melhor produção (P<0,05) foi a do cultivar ADR-7010 (1175,9 kg.ha -1 de MS), o superfosfato simples apresentou resultados superiores. O incremento de N promoveu aumentos produtivos, a sucessão dos cortes reduziu a produção de MS. Houve diferença (P<0,05) para NC, sendo que, à medida que as doses de N foram elevadas, houve acréscimo linear do NC com valor máximo de 42,7 kg de N extraído. A ECAN e RAN diminuiu em função do acréscimo do nutriente, com valores máximos de 10,7 kg.ha -1 e 33,4% na dose referente a 40 kg.ha -1 de N. A fertilização nitrogenada promoveu incrementos na produção de massa seca dos cultivares de milheto. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: fósforo, Pennisetum glaucum, potencial produtivo, proteína bruta, uréia. -The influence of early weaning and concentrate supplementation strategies on sward characteristics, forage chemical composition and lamb productivity were evaluated in four production systems on Tifton-85 pasture: suckling lambs not supplemented until slaughter; suckling lambs supplemented with concentrate in creep feeding until slaughter; early-weaned lambs not supplemented until slaughter; and early-weaned lambs supplemented with concentrate until slaughter. Structural, morphological and productive characteristics of pasture were measured. The forage was chemically analyzed to estimate its composition. Lambs average daily gain and productivity were calculated. Sward height, forage and morphological components mass were lower in systems without weaning. Forage production was higher in systems with supplementation. Higher levels of neutral and acid detergent fiber were observed in forage ingested by lambs in creep feeding and by weaned and unsupplemented lambs. Average daily gain was higher for lambs in creep feeding (275 g/d) and lower for the weaned and unsupplemented animals (57 g/d). Productivity was higher for weaned and supplemented lambs (21 kg lamb body weight, BW gain/ha/d). Lower productivity was observed in systems without supplementation (5 kg lamb BW gain/ha/d on average). Ewes modify the sward conditions improving the pasture characteristics and the quality of forage produced. Changes in sward conditions affect the chemical composition of forage ingested by lambs. Early weaning may be an alternative to maximize pasture utilization in small areas. Concentrate supplementation may increase lamb performance and productivity in grazing systems. If the objective is to improve lamb individual performance, creep feeding should be used.
