Consumers and COVID-19: A Real-Time Survey

Abstract: We summarize the results from an ongoing survey that asks consumers questions related to the recent coronavirus outbreak, including their expectations for how the economy is likely to be affected by the outbreak and how their own behavior has changed in response to it. The survey began in early March, providing a window into how consumers’ responses have evolved in real time since the early days of the acknowledged spread of COVID-19 in the United States. “…Many of our questions asked respondents to select an answer from a limited set of options. Knotek et al (2020) discuss some of the other questions in the survey, which are used to provide ongoing updates to the Consumers and COVID-19 section on the Cleveland Fed's website. Table 1 compactly summarizes most of the survey questions and the associated percentage of respondents who selected a particular answer to those questions.…”

Dietrich et al (2020) and Knotek et al (2020) present the results of a real-time survey conducted by Dietrich et al (2020) of American households to inform policymakers and researchers about consumers' beliefs during the COVID-19 outbreak. Although they make significant contributions to the literature by presenting results from the U.S., our study contributes to the literature by presenting results from China, where the outbreak initiated.…”

“…Namely, the survey used in this study has detailed information on Chinese households, and we are able to merge this data with the latest data from the China Household Finance Survey conducted in 2019 to perform a more in-depth analysis. Additionally, Dietrich et al (2020) and Knotek et al (2020) posit that the extent of the outbreak was not clear in the U.S. when the survey began because there were only about 1,000 confirmed cases. But according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center, there were 44,759 confirmed cases in China when the survey began.…”
