Constant on time controlled zero voltage switching electronic ballast with power quality improvement

Abstract: This study deals with the design, modelling and implementation of unity power factor (UPF) boundary conduction mode (BCM)-based electronic ballast for a T8, 36 W fluorescent lamp. In low power applications, BCMbased boost converter is widely used because of the low inductor value, however, because of zero crossover distortion, achieving a total harmonic distortion of <10% is difficult for universal AC mains. In proposed electronic ballast, UPF has been achieved at universal AC mains by using a boost power fact… Show more

“…Converters with interleaved operation can provide higher output power and lower input current ripple [17][18][19][20]. Recently, the boundary-conduction-mode (BCM) boost converter with interleaving more channels has been a popular topology due to its higher output power levels [21,22]. In general, few reports are available for capacitive energy storage based on interleaved operation.…”

“…Although LEDs are replacing fluorescent lamps in commercial as well as domestic lighting applications, the ongoing research activities relating to e-ballast technology indicate the relevance of this present study. Recent publications address some of the related aspects of the e-ballast, namely (1) improvement of efficiency of the e-ballast by reducing the number of stages, active switches and components and by minimizing the switching loss; 6,7 (2) reduction of power quality problems by increasing input power factor and decreasing the input current distortion; 8,9 and (3) development of new control topologies for satisfactory performance of the lamp system under rated and dimming conditions. 10…”

“…For achieving PF close to unity at AC supply, PFR (PF regulation) converters are embedded, following to a DBR [17][18][19][20][21]. The mode of operation of PFR converter is a significant factor as it directly affects the rating of passive elements of converter and cost of overall system.…”
