Management practices can affect the phenology and, consequently, the harvest time and crop production level of forage cactus. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of irrigation depths and cropping systems on the phenophases and cutting time of the forage cactus Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw. The experimental design was a randomized block with split plots and four replications. Irrigation depths based on reference evapotranspiration (8.75 %, 17.5 %, 26.25 % and 35 % ETo) and a control (0 % ETo) made up the plots, while cropping systems (exclusive cropping, exclusive cropping on mulch and forage cactus-sorghum intercropping) were distributed in the subplots. Cladode emission morphogenesis was used to define the phenological phases, while the extrapolation of the monthly dry matter accumulation rate was applied to obtain the cutting time. The use of irrigation depths significantly increased the phenophase II (higher emission of second-order daughter cladodes), decreasing the phenophase III, associated with third-order daughter cladodes. The phenophase III was lower in the exclusive cropping on mulch and forage cactus-sorghum intercropping systems, when compared to the exclusive cropping system. The ideal cutting time for irrigated forage cactus is 19 months, regardless of the cropping system. The exclusive cropping on mulch and forage cactus-sorghum intercropping systems significantly increased the monthly forage dry matter accumulation rate, with an earlier cutting time for the forage cactus-sorghum intercropping system (17 months).

RESUMO -O consórcio de sorgo com braquiária é uma técnica de cultivo promissora para produção de grãos e biomassa. No entanto, há carência de informações em relação à escolha de híbridos graníferos para serem consorciados com espécies de braquiária para cultivo nos cerrados. Portanto, o objetivo do trabalho é testar híbridos de sorgo granífero em consórcio na linha com diferentes espécies de braquiárias para produção de grãos e biomassa, em dois cortes, na região dos cerrados. O ensaio foi implantado em campo, em Rio Verde-GO, na safrinha de 2010, empregando os híbridos de sorgo BRS 310 e DKB 599 consorciados na linha com as espécies Urochloa brizantha cvs. Marandu, Xaraés e Piatã, U. decumbens e U. ruziziensis, além dos tratamentos adicionais referentes aos monocultivos de sorgo e das espécies de braquiárias. Os resultados obtidos permitiram constatar que o consórcio de sorgo granífero com espécies de braquiárias afetou a população de plantas e o rendimento de grãos do sorgo, além do perfilhamento da braquiária. Contudo, o consórcio de sorgo e braquiária em safrinha nos cerrados apresentou potencial de adoção para produção de grãos e biomassa na entressafra. GRAIN SORGHUM HYBRIDS INTERCROPPED WITH BRACHIARIAS IN OFF-SEASON CULTIVATION TO PRODUCE GRAINS AND BIOMASSABSTRACT -The sorghum and Urochloa intercropping is a promising technique to produce grains and biomass. However, there is lack of informations about the choice of grain sorghum hybrids to be intercropped with Urochloa species at Brazilian cerrado. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate grain sorghum hybrids in intercropping at line with different species of Urochloa to produce grain and biomass in two cuts at cerrado region. The experiment was installed in the field, in Rio Verde, State of Goiás, Brazil, in the 2010 off-season cultivation. It was used the grain sorghum hybrids BRS 310 and DKB 599 intercropped at line with the species Urochloa brizantha cvs. Marandu, Xaraés and Piatã, U. decumbens and U. ruziziensis, and the treatments the Urochloa and sorghum monocrops. The results revealed that the grain sorghum intercropped with Urochloa species affected the plant population and grain yield of sorghum crop, beyond the tillering of Urochloa. However, Urochloa and sorghum intercropping in off-season cultivation has the potential adoption at Brazilian cerrado to produce grain and biomass.

The intercrop of grain sorghum with Urochloa ruziziensis allows the production of grains and biomass in the winter. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the more adequate seeding system and seed density for Urochloa ruziziensis intercropped with sorghum between soybean crops to obtain high grain and biomass yields with these species and evaluate the performance of the subsequent soybean crop. The experiments were carried out in the winter of 2015 and in the 2015-2016 crop season in Rio Verde GO, and Santa Helena de Goiás GO, Brazil. The treatments consisted of three seeding systems (in-row, inter-row, and broadcast), and five seed densities (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 viable seeds m-2) of U. ruziziensis intercropped with sorghum, using monocultures of sorghum and U. ruziziensis as controls. The seeding density of 8 viable seeds m-2 of U. ruziziensis using in-row seeding, and up to 10 viable seeds m-2 using inter-row, and broadcast seedings do not decrease sorghum grain yield. Increasing seeding density of U. ruziziensis increases its dry matter yield, and the total dry matter yield when intercropped with sorghum. The intercrop of sorghum with U. ruziziensis increases the soil plant coverage. The dry matter of the intercrop of sorghum with U. ruziziensis does not affect soybean grain yield.
