Show more

“…Trichiurus lepturus is distributed from coastal waters to 300 m of depth (Magro, 2005). The observation of smaller preys in estuarine dolphins could be related to the common presence of juvenile fishes in the estuary, which is an important breeding area for several fish species (Besnard, 1950;Schaeffer-Novelli et al, 1990). The only cephalopod species reported from the individuals found in inner estuarine waters was Loligunculla brevis; meanwhile this species and Doryteuthis plei were reported for coastal dolphins.…”

“…The geological and geomorphological characteristics of the Cananéia-Iguape system have been analyzed for at least six decades in several studies since the original papers by Besnard (1950), who proposed four stages of evolution based on geomorphological evidence. According to the author, the process occurred during the late Tertiary and the early Quaternary periods and was associated with a slow sea level regression forming the coastal plain.…”

“…The latter includes inshore waters from Iguape (24° 36' S and 47° 23' W), São Paulo State, to Pontal do Sul (25° 36' S and 48° 25' W), Paraná State. Large mangrove forests and salt marshes surround the whole estuary, which is characterised by muddy bottom, shallow (up to 27 m) and relatively turbid waters with high concentrations of nutrients, zooplankton, shrimp, and fish found year-round (Besnard, 1950;Sinque et al, 1982;Brandini, 1985;Corrêa, 1987;Knoppers et al, 1987;Schaeffer-Novelli et al, 1990;Mendonça and Katsuragawa, 1997;Corrêa, 2000). Due to their ecological importance, several areas of the Lagamar estuary were designated as protected reserves in the 1980s (see Schaeffer-Novelli et al, 1990;IPARDES, 2001), and further studies on ecology are still necessary to reinforce the needs for nature conservation.…”
