Abstract: Picornavirus genomes encode unique 5' noncoding regions (5' NCRs) which are-600 to 1,300 nucleotides in length, contain multiple upstream AUG codons, and display the ability to form extensive secondary structures. A number of recent reports have shown that picornavirus 5' NCRs are able to facilitate cap-independent internal initiation of translation.
