Abstract: Peritoneal encapsulation (PE) is a rare congenital malformation, characterized by a thin accessory peritoneal membrane which covers all or part of the small bowel, forming an accessory peritoneal sac. Most cases are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally during surgery and/or autopsy. Clinical presentation with intestinal obstruction is extremely rare and we report a case. A 25-year-old male, referred to emergency department with diffuse abdominal pain, crampy, with 8 h evolution, associated with nausea, vomi… Show more

“…In these reports, the band was divided to relieve the obstruction, and its associated vessel was observed to divide into two branches above the terminal ileum 19–21. Histological examination of the sac typically reveals mesothelium of peritoneal origin covering fibrovascular tissue 22…”

“…Peritoneal encapsulation is a rare anatomical finding, where an abnormal return of the midgut into the abdominal cavity of the fetus during the 12 th week of gestation causes the covering layer of yolk sac to encapsulate the small bowel instead of remaining in the umbilical pedicle (2,3). The peritoneal accessory sac covers the small bowel partially or entirely, can be covered by the greater omentum (but it can also be absent), and usually extends from the ascending and descending colon laterally, superiorly to the mid transverse colon and inferiorly to the pelvic parietal peritoneum (4)(5)(6).…”

“…Peritoneal Encapsulation (PE) is a very rare congenital malformation, characterized by a supplementary peritoneal membrane that covers partially or totally the small intestine [1] , [2] . The majority of cases of PE remain asymptomatic and diagnosed accidentally during autopsy and/or surgery [3] , [4] .…”
