Congenital chondromyxoid fibroma of the ethmoid: case report

Abstract: This report describes a congenital case of chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) arising from the ethmoid bone. We believe it to be the second case of congenital CMF that has been documented, and the third case of CMF arising in the ethmoid. We describe the radiographic features of this rare entity and indicate the necessity for careful correlation between radiographic and histological findings to distinguish CMF from chondrosarcoma.

“…3,4,10,11 The most common site of the tumor is the metaphysis of long bones adjacent to the epiphyseal growth plate. 2,6,7,12 This is consistent with the hypothesis that the tumor arises from remnants of cartilage at these sites. 2 CMF may occur at any age, however, most reported cases age between 10 and 30 years.…”

“…Craniofacial bone involvement is uncommon and represents 2% of all CMF cases. 18 Places where CMF has been reported are the cranial vault, 10,19,20 skull base, 1,3,9,15,17 maxilla, 3 ethmoid, 2,12,18 sella turcica, 11 sphenoid sinus, 14 temporal bone, 4,13 and orbit. 8,21 CMFs are believed to be acquired lesions.…”

“…6 CMF has been reported in many craniofacial region sites; however, the tumor is extremely rare in the ethmoid sinus, with only eight cases reported in the English literature (Table 1). 3,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] This tumor type has been described in neonates and adults of both genders. There is no established radiological pattern for CMF due to its rarity.…”
