The reaction of 1,3-bis(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-2-oxapropane (L) with Co(ClO 4 ) 2 ·6H 2 O in absolute ethanol yielded the bis[1,3-bis(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl-κN 3 )-2-oxapropane]cobalt(2+) diperchlorate chelate complex ([Co(L) 2 ](ClO 4 ) 2 , 1). Complex 1 was characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic moment and molar conductivity measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis and mass spectrometry, and its solid-state structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. According to the elemental and thermogravimetric analysis data, no water either coordinated or uncoordinated is present in 1. Complex 1 has 1:2 M:L ionic characteristic according to the molar conductivity value. In the complex, the distances between the cobalt and the ethereal oxygen atoms (Co1-O2: 2.805(3); Co2-O1: 2.752(2) Å) show semi-coordination bonding and the Co(II) ion is six-coordinated with a N 4 O 2 ligand set, resulting in a distorted octahedron.

Six new optically active poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) 6a-f were prepared by direct polycondensation reaction of N-trimellitylimido-L-histidine 4 as a chiral diacid with various aromatic diamines 5a-f. Triphenyl phosphite (TPP)/pyridine (Py) in the presence of calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) were successfully applied to direct polycondensation reaction. The resulting new polymers were in good yields, and had inherent viscosities ranging between 0.29 and 0.41 dL g 1 and were detected with elemental analysis, FTIR, 1 H-NMR spectroscopy, specific rotation and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and derivative of thermaogravimetry (DTG). Imidazole pendent groups of the polymer chains disturb interchain and intrachain interactions and make these PAIs readily soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), NMP and solvents such as sulfuric acid. An optically active diacid containing the L-histidine moiety was prepared by reacting pyromellitic dianhydride (1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid 1,2,4,5-dianhydride) 1 with L-histidine 2 in acetic acid, and was polymerized with several aromatic diamines 5a-g to obtain a new series of optically active poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) using two different methods, such as direct polycondensation in a medium consisting of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)/triphenyl phosphite (TPP)/calcium chloride (CaCl 2 )/pyridine (Py) and direct polycondensation in a tosyl chloride (TsCl)/pyridine (Py)/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) system as a condensation agent. The resulting new polymers 6a-g with inherent viscosity was obtained in good yield. The polymers were readily soluble in polar organic solvents, such as N,N-dimethyacetamide (DMAc), N,N-dimethyformamide (DMF), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The obtained polymers were characterized by FTIR, specific rotation, elemental analysis as well as 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal stability of the resulting PAIs was evaluated with thermogravimetric analysis techniques under a nitrogen atmosphere.
