RESUMOO artigo trata dos sentidos sociais, relevantes ao campo da educação, que emanam da coexistência legal entre a faixa etária adolescente e jovem, segundo o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente e o Estatuto da Juventude, destacando a discussão sobre as definições e conceituações de adolescência e juventude. Para tanto, faz-se uma revisão bibliográfica focada principalmente nas ciências sociais, secundariamente na educação e na psicologia social, campos do conhecimento que mais trataram da temática, em especial a respeito das definições e conceituações. Trata, primeiro, da importância da cronologização e institucionalização do curso da vida nas sociedades modernas, e, em seguida, das concepções de adolescência e juventude. Como principais resultados, tem-se o caráter social e histórico de ambas as categorias etárias, a relevância de se considerar a adolescência como a fase inicial da juventude e a preocupação com as ameaças aos direitos específicos destes sujeitos, adolescentes e jovens, no contexto brasileiro atual.

ABSTRACTThe article deals about relevant social meanings to the field of education, emanating from the legal coexistence between the adolescent and young people, according to the Statute of Children and Adolescent and the Statute of Young People, highlighting the discussion of the definitions and conceptualizations about adolescent and young people. Therefore, it makes a literature review focused mainly on the social science, education and social psychology, fields of knowledge that dealt with the subject, especially on the definitions and conceptualizations. Firstly, it deals with the importance of chronology and institutionalizing the way of life in modern societies, and then about adolescent and young conceptions. As a result, it is presented the social and historical character of both age categories, the importance of considering adolescence as the initial phase of youth, the concern about threats to specific rights of these individuals, both adolescents and young people, in the current Brazilian context.
