“…However, in the present research, this prevalence was distinct and related to worst physical performance, which may be explained by the debilitating characteristics of the studied group. Although the literature shows a relationship between the occurrence of falls and low visual acuity and physical activity 24,[27][28][29] , this was not observed in the two comparative analyses of the present study. These results may be explained by the limiting factors of this research, such as the low rate of active older adults, the predominance of normal or close to normal vision, the lack of details in the FIM motor tasks, as well as the indirect measures of strength, gait and balance, in spite of the satisfactory reliability obtained in the validation of the Brazilian version of the SPPB 13 .…”

“…The results showed a better performance of the practitioners of AVG in both handgrip strength and mobility, when compared to the members of other groups ( Figure 1 and Figure 2). One possible explanation for the results found would be that the volleyball group practices activities in a more directed way, with higher levels of physical activity, minimizing the declines of aging, as well as muscle strength, balance and mobility, suggesting that older adults who practice this activity have less inclination to falls 17 . The handgrip strength showed that the AVG showed greater strength than the other groups.…”

“…Franchi et al [20], também estudando idosos com diabetes em São Paulo, revelou altos índices de sedentarismo (71%). Essa é uma realidade preocupante, pois dentre os benefícios provocados pela prática de exercícios físicos pelas pessoas idosas, destacam-se melhoras na capacidade funcional, equilíbrio, força, coordenação e velocidade de movimento, o que contribui para maior segurança e prevenção de quedas nessa população [23].…”
