Concomitant radio- and fluorescence-guided sentinel lymph node biopsy in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity using ICG-99mTc-nanocolloid

Abstract: Combined preoperative SLN identification and intraoperative radio- and fluorescence guidance during SLN biopsies for oral cavity cancer proved feasible using ICG-(99m)Tc-nanocolloid. The addition of fluorescence imaging was shown to be of particular value when SLNs were located in close proximity to the primary tumour.

“…Because of the short range of the b 1 -particles, however, detailed preoperative anatomic localization is a prerequisite, which may be provided by PET/CT. Another promising approach for intraoperative detection is the use of near-infrared fluorescence imaging, which should also be able to identify SNs near the injection site (12)(13)(14). The different techniques have to be clinically evaluated in order to conclude which is best suited for intraoperative SN detection.…”

“…Alternative to navigating toward an SN, one may also think of using this approach for hybrid tracer-based radioguided occult lesion localization (or for a seed-localization setup wherein hybrid marker seeds are applied) (16,17). PET-based navigation in combination with intraoperative Cerenkov imaging could also provide an interesting extension (18).…”
