Concise Review: Evidence for CD34 as a Common Marker for Diverse Progenitors

Abstract: CD34 is a transmembrane phosphoglycoprotein, first identified on hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Clinically, it is associated with the selection and enrichment of hematopoietic stem cells for bone marrow transplants. Due to these historical and clinical associations, CD34 expression is almost ubiquitously related to hematopoietic cells, and it is a common misconception that CD34-positive (CD34+) cells in nonhematopoietic samples represent hematopoietic contamination. The prevailing school of thought s… Show more

“…C‐kit is a receptor that binds SCF, resulting in the mobilisation of calcium via a src family kinase and PI3K 22. In addition to its functional importance, c‐Kit is also essential for the differentiation of ICCs 39, 40,as CD34 is a typical marker for a wide variety of blood progenitor cells 41, and more generally, a marker of undifferentiated cells in various tissues 42.…”

“…Ubiquitous CD34 expression is related to hematopoietic cells, and it serves as a marker to enrich hematopoietic stem cells for bone marrow transplants 50. CD34 + non‐hematopoietic lineage cells also represent a distinct subset of cells with enhanced progenitor activity, such as muscle satellite cells, interstitial cells, epithelial progenitors and CSKs 51. The CD34 + expressing cells could thus represent the quiescent CSKs or stromal progenitors,52 whereas CD34 − cells are the activated keratocytes not yet fully reverted to the quiescent condition 53.…”

“…The CD34 is a highly glycosylated molecule made of single-chain glycoprotein with a weight of 110 kDa which is known as a cell surface marker in blood precursor cells as well as endothelial cells (Sidney et al, 2014). CD34 is activated as a receptor or ligand in the cell membrane through phosphorylating by kinases and transfers messages and the cells interaction (Sidney et al, 2014).…”

“…CD34 is activated as a receptor or ligand in the cell membrane through phosphorylating by kinases and transfers messages and the cells interaction (Sidney et al, 2014). Expression of CD34 in colon stromal tumor is increased compared to normal tissue, so that it was significantly more than benign tumors in colon malignant tumors (Sidney et al, 2014). The CD34 expression is significantly associated with adenomas containing severe dysplasia and large adenomas (more than 1 cm) (Qasim et al, 2012;Sidney et al, 2014).…”
