English is an important international language. Whether it is international economic or international political communication, it is inseparable from English. English teaching is mainly to impart the basic knowledge of English as well as the knowledge of audiovisual knowledge. However, the traditional English teaching mode often ignores the expression of English emotion and the background of English. The traditional English teaching mode often uses textbooks and other forms to impart knowledge, which can no longer meet the English teaching in today’s era. Computer-aided systems have become an important technology in the field of teaching today. Multimedia technology can also show English knowledge to students in the form of video or audio. This will increase students’ interest in learning English. This research will use computer platform and multimedia technology to build a new English teaching platform. It also uses the ConvLSTM algorithm and the CF algorithm to implement the active recommendation function of English knowledge. The research results show that multimedia technology can achieve the purpose of collecting video and audio information in the process of English teaching. The CF algorithm has a specific high similarity index in recommending English knowledge. The ConvLSTM method can also better predict the characteristics of English grammar and English emotion in the English teaching process. This can also show that the multimedia-assisted English teaching mode has a certain use value for different English teaching scenarios.

How public confidence was established during the COVID-19 pandemic by Chinese media: A corpus-based discursive news value analysis

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese media played a significant role in dispelling the public panic, establishing the public confidence and stabilizing the society during the COVID-19 pandemic. This corpus-based discourse study explored the discursive construction of news values by Chinese media to reveal how the COVID-19 pandemic was packaged and sold to the public to establish confidence in the news reporting. Adopting corpus linguistic method and the Discursive news values analysis (DNVA) framework, this study examines news values through key words, news quotations, and images in the Chinese domestic mainstream media (http://www.people.com.cn/) during two different phases of the pandemic. The results show that during the first pandemic phase (2019.12.27–2020.4.28) when there had been no treatment protocol or understanding of the medical ramifications, Chinese media dominantly constructed political Eliteness through multimodal resources to portray a people-oriented government, a transparent notification mechanism and an immediate response capability to crises, and to give the public psychological support and to cultivate positive attitudes toward the government's policy. This news reporting way exposes the universal trust of Chinese society in the political authorities. During the second phase (2020.4.29–2020.8.31) when the cognition about the COVID-19 virus had been greatly improved and more medical treatment and prevention methods had been developed, the political Eliteness was replaced by medical Eliteness which was more vital to people's safety during the health crisis. We propose actionable recommendations for scholars to use this in-depth DNVA framework to examine the social trend of thoughts during major public health crisis.

Is checkworthiness generalizable? Evaluating task and domain generalization of datasets for claim detection

The spread of misinformation has reached a level at which neither research nor fact-checkers can monitor it only manually anymore. Accordingly, there has been much research on models and datasets for detecting checkworthy claims. However, the research in NLP is mostly detached from findings in communication science on misinformation and fact-checking. Checkworthiness is a notoriously vague concept whose meaning is contested among different stakeholders. Against the background of news value theory, i.e., the study of factors that make an event relevant for journalistic reporting, this is not surprising. It is argued that this vagueness leads to inconsistencies and poor generalization across different datasets and domains. For the experiments, models are trained on one dataset, tested on the remaining, and evaluated against the results on the original performance, against a random baseline, and against the scores when the models are not trained at all. The study finds that there is a drastic reduction in comparison with the performance on the original dataset. Moreover, often the models are outperformed by the random baseline and training on one dataset has no or even a negative impact on the performance on the other datasets. This paper proposes that future research should abandon this task design and instead take inspiration from research in communication science. In the style of news values, Claim Detection should focus on factors that are relevant for fact-checkers and misinformation.
