Computational and experimental study of air-core HTS transformer electrothermal behaviour at current limiting mode

Abstract: The paper provides the results of the experimental and computational study of the processes occurring in high temperature superconducting transformer windings while secondary winding is short-circuited. The obtained mathematical simulation matches closely with the experimental results. The temperature variation curves for superconducting windings were analysed, and conclusions were made on the necessity of changes in HTS transformer design, namely the necessity of windings heat-insulation from each other and a… Show more

“…From the perspective of insulation operating life, the windings and solid insulating materials of superconducting transformers operate at deep low temperatures, and there is no insulation aging problem. [3,4]. In an emergency, a superconducting transformer can carry the load originally supplied by two transformers, which improves the safety of the system.…”

“…Assume the temperature difference between the winding and the cryomedium is large (about 30 K). In that case, liquid nitrogen can transfer to the film boiling mode, which results in minimal heat removal from the winding Figure 5 [22]. This mode of nitrogen boiling is unacceptable since it can lead to a thermal failure of the winding, which can only be prevented by a forced transformer shutdown.…”

“…1, October 2021: 37 -49 38 magnetizing inrush current [14], converting three-phase to seven-phase waveforms [15], successfully. However, these built-in models or blocks has a limited ability to adopt certain changes needed for particular tests [16]- [18], simulate unbalanced operating conditions [19], analyse the transient behaviour [20]. Also, the built-in blocks are not suited to model special types of electrical machines [21] or to represent specific physical characteristics of electrical machines [22].…”
